Please don't tell me what I am, Halil, OK?

show me your ID card ......

This has nothing to do with ID cards. Please don't offend me.

You may be happy to accept working for an organisation that insists you are a Turk of Cyprus.

I, however, am not happy to accept anything or anyone telling me what I am. Accept what I am telling you; find a way to live with it - as you have to find a way to live with what Turkey is doing to you.

Cypriot IDs only indicate Cypriot as nationality. No mention of Hellenic anywhere.

So that proves that we are just Cypriot!

Why? It's a symbol of Byzantium, an empire which I know you're still in love with.

Emblem
Byzantium first produced coins with the crescent and star symbol in the 4th century BC. According to legend, this was to honour the moon-goddess Hecate, who the inhabitants believed had saved the city from attack by Philip II of Macedon in 340-339 BC... Byzantium would then also be the first attested nation or empire to use the combination of the crescent moon and star together as an emblem.

Thank you dear; semiotics is my passion. But as I said, those showing "National allegiance" to such a symbol should be thrown off Cyprus.... I have no problem with it for most other reasons, just as anyone can speak Turkish in Cyprus, but it should not be the Official language ...

A time and place for everything ....

But what if I wanted to fly the Star and Crescent from my home – to show my national allegiance to an empire long past - that once ruled Cyprus?

Surely you wouldn't object. After all, the church flies this symbol of an empire long past to show allegiance. Do you find this objectionable to?

Newer TC ID's have nothing about nationality stated on them.

TCs are nearly down to single figures. The Island is too small to cater for just a few thousand people in terms of Official paperwork, especially since English is going to be the working language; that should suffice for non-Greek speakers.

Turkish will of course be taught in schools and used freely; it just does not need to be a second Official language. In particular, now that it is so strongly associated/reinforced as the language of the invaders ... (present company excluded, of course  ).
