I'm Cypriot

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Very, very, very, near the line? There's only one that would be so heart-breakingly close to freedom, that comes to mind.

I think you got it.... I actually got out of my car and started walking to the church... and then I heard gun shots and bid a hasty retreat.

Gosh mate. Just as well the boy was a bad shot.

It is Achna isn't it? Knew it was close and your photo really does bear that out, and there seems to be nothing substantial in the way of a barrier.

Yes... it's Achna. And the photo (which isn't mine by the way – but it is a beautiful shot) is exactly the scene as I remembered on that day - when I single-handedly tried to take on Turkey's military in a bid to free my mother's village.

I was young, full of bravado. And lucky to be alive!

I guess they didn't realise you were Cypriot ... maybe thought you were some foreign invader; bless them for caring for Cyprus!

Achna was completely deserted; a total ghost town but for one young sentry who popped out of nowhere once I'd driven passed the barricades and into the village. That was after I'd given up on getting to the church on foot.

I was with a friend and our car had tourist plates. When the sentry saw us we spoke to him in English. We pretended to be lost and asked for directions to Larnaca. He just pointed with his gun to go back the way we'd come.

Nice story mate.

You could be walking into a Gun-Free Achna pretty soon.
