Paphos traffic police promise summer crackdown, yeah right!

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=46564

CHIEF OF Paphos traffic police Zinon Psathitis has warned drivers that extensive measures will be put in place to ensure illegal parking is stopped and bad driving is eradicated during the summer months.

Psathitis said police, with the co-operation of traffic wardens, would attempt to halt illegal parking in allocated bus stops, which is a particular problem in Kato Paphos.

One of these hotspots is a busy bus stop on Poseidonos Avenue, on the seafront, which often has two or three cars illegally parked in the bay.

On Saturday, passengers’ entry and exit to one bus was blocked by a sports car, which had parked in the space and was later joined by a large four-wheel-drive. The vehicles hampered a family attempting to help an elderly woman board the bus and the pensioner became distressed, according to eyewitnesses.

Anna Tsvegalis, who works as a waitress in a nearby café explained that this is not a new problem, but pointed out that it has worsened since the closure of the seaside road to traffic during the day in the summer months.

A number of local businessmen have also come forward, complaining that their customers don’t have anywhere to park, as there are few parking spaces in the area.

Many drivers are not prepared to pay to use private car park situated directly behind the avenue.

In addition, Psathities said there would be a crack down on Z-plated hire cars, which litter the pavements of Kato Paphos and assured that fines would be handed out.

Psathities added that these problems have been compounded due to an increase in traffic in Paphos since the middle of June.

He also urged all drivers – and in particular inexperienced motorists – to be careful and avoid dangerous driving, which often has a tragic result.

I'll believe it when I see it. Yes of course they will target the Z cars they are the easy prey but what about the rest of the vehicles?

The traffic in Pafos hasn't increased very much, it only looks that way because some dim witted pea brain gave the go ahead for all the road works in the middle of summer.

What roads aren't closed to traffic are virtually impossible to drive on due to the dangerous state they've been left in, and this is a town that says it wants more tourists. Don't make me laugh!

Speaking of picking on z plates ...

Some years ago parked on Phinikouthes, Larnaca along with dozens and dozens and dozens of other drivers. All parked illegally.

On our return we (z) had a ticket, all the other dozens and dozens of cars, parked equally illegally, didn't, except one other, a car with tissy plates.

Needless to say (but I wil) the fine remains unpaid.

What the Cypriot police don't understand is that the law applies to everybody.

They will never have the respect (and lets face it they need it) of any community while they ride around in their cars and only get out to book Z cars.

Question:-

When was the last time you saw a policeman walking, actually walking whilst on duty?

Not popping round to the cafe for a snack or walking across the road for a newpaper, actually walking, on duty doing something to with WORK?
