In the UK there is a compensation scheme into which all solicitors have to pay to cover property sale proceeds that might myseriously go missing. Does anyone know if there is a similar system in Cyprus ? Do Cyprus solicitors have to be a member of a particular professional body ?

Yes they are all member of the local Bar Association and the Cyprus Bar Association. As far i know they are recently(started from last year i think) "forced" by the association to have an insurance for any claim may occure against them due to the exercise of their profession (in general something which include and the property sale proceeds).
