I had posted this intriguing headline from 1953 before but nobody touched it.

Perhaps someone knows a few simple details ?

Did Mahmut Kiamil become mufti ?

CHARGE PLOT IN DELAY OF MUFTI VOTE ON CYPRUS

Press Alleges Intrigue in Favor of Turk

Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1963) - Chicago, Ill.
Date: Oct 5, 1953

Two Turkish language newspapers here today accused government officials of intrigue in an attempt to get Mahmut Kiamil of Istanbul elected as mufti, or supreme religious leader of 95,000 Turkish Moslems on the island.

Thanks guys.

I have been reading CF during my lunch breaks at work but I find it difficult to put down my burger and type a few comments in the threads.

It means the British started their divide and rule plans earlier than we thought!
