Milti. while I do agree with your statement above, some might see a more sinister motive for the contination of these 'embargoes' and non-recognition. The continuous embargoes will ensure that the TCs will be a much 'weaker' partner in any peace solution. I do not see what the GCs fear of a more developed Turkish Cypriot presence. There should be more faith and shown towards the Turkish Cypriots; the ending of these restrictions will show 'goodwill' from te Greek Cypriots. (I am not talking about recognition here - just isolation and embargoes).

Deniz, the problem with lifting the embargoes is that the trnc would/could claim this as recognition whether the ROC made non-recognition a condition or not. The ROC would also be loathe to do anything that would benefit the settlers or the TAF. Confidence building measures would certainly give a lift to the current talks. In the current climate if it was just TCs and GCs negotiating I'm sure that an agreement could be reached but Turkey, the settlers and carpetbaggers have complicated the the search for a solution. My own view is that Varosha should be returned to the ROC in exchange for say legally opening the port of Famagusta or possibly even Tymbou.
That I am aware of. How else do you think you can get more TCs to say 'Yes, re-unification is ok because we can trust the GCs.'
As I said Varosha for ports, however if what Halil says about Talat wanting arbitration is true then we may not need confidence building measures.
I was always for the relinquishing Varosha. You seem to have more faith in Talat than I do. I hope you are right.

Tymbou or Varosha port cannot be opened unless the Turkish occupation forces remove themselves from them and they are left as enclaves of areas controlled by the government of Cyprus. That means ROC custom officers, ROC police etc. These employees can be TC, it doesn't matter, what matters is that all ports are controlled by the government of Cyprus and not by an occupation force.
You cannot recognise a port on your soil when you have no control over it and the entity that controls it has no requirement to abide by EU custom regulations.
I am not disagreeing with you. Lets see what the 'negotiators' will come up with.
