So what do you think about them little guys in the middle? Are they finally going to manage to get it together?
My guess is no.
You've got to remember that with politicians egos are in play, even if they have a small bite of the cherry whilst sitting at the top of their table, it's better than being a mere diner at a larger feast. Plus, DHKO still confuses me. TPap declared them as a Social-Democratic party a couple of years ago, yet they still seem to lack any sort of encompassing ideology, beyond an attachment to the national cause. If DHKO sorted its act out and went down the route of Social Democracy, I think you would see a coalescence around them in the centre and then Cyprus would have a true tripartite competition.
However, as discussed in the politics section, I think the Vouli elections next year will be key to determining the direction of Cypriot politics in the coming decade. DHKO's support has been slowly ebbing away for years, but this election could witness a resurgence. Also, you've now got this European Democracy party that could steal quite a few votes from DHSY (disaffected DHSY voters unhappy with the party's stance on the AP or unhappy with Anastasiades leadership). It'll also be interesting to see how EDEK do this time around. Also interesting is whether the AKEL vote holds up after their pretty dismal display in the Euroelections last year - which I think was largely due to the no-shows of historically AKEL voters, indicative in itself.
Anyways, I should be writing elsewhere...
Need to finish my second theory chapter by the end of the weekend...
