THERE ARE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF TERRITORY

The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has said that there are differences between the two sides on the fundamental principles of territory.

He said that these differences will be more visible once maps outlining the borders of the future constituent states are put on the table.

Speaking to reporters after returning to the Presidential Palace at the end of today’s meeting, President Mehmet Ali Talat said that the first reading on the chapter of territory had been concluded at today’s meeting.

He said they will start discussions on the chapter of security and guarantees when they meet next Thursday on the 9th of June.
Talat also said that he and Demetris Christofias had agreed on a timetable for meetings until October later this year.

Explaining that he had exchanged views with the Greek Cypriot leader regarding the details of the opening of a crossing point at Yesilirmak during his tete-a-tete meeting with him, the President said the UN played an important role in the opening of the Yesilirmak gate.

“Our special representatives who we have instructed will be discussing the details of the work that needs to be carried out in the area, both in and outside the bufferzone, such as the widening of roads. We will need to embark on these projects following careful preparation” the President added.

Responding to a question as to how much convergence has been reached in the territory chapter, the TRNC President said that they had only discussed the fundamental principles and that nothing was discussed over maps.

“We just discussed fundamental principles over which differences between the two sides exist. Naturally these differences will be more visible as and when maps relating to the boundaries of the constituent states emerge. However since our talks are not very concrete, the true scale of our differences will emerge when we reach that stage” he said.

President Mehmet Ali Talat said that they planned to conclude preliminary discussions on the chapter of Security and Guarantees by the end of July and to move on to the next stage of the talks in the first week of August.

Talat also expressed the view that quintet meetings with the participation of guarantor countries Turkey and Greece should also take place during that stage of the talks.

According to a statement read out by the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative at the end of today’s meeting, the two leaders will hold 4 meetings in July, scheduled for the 9th, 17th, 23rd and 30th.

An additional meeting will be held on the 6th of August before a three week break in the talks.

The two leaders are set to resume negotiations in September.
Talat and Christofias are scheduled to meet on the 3rd, 10th and 17th of September and on the 2nd of October.

That’s right… one side believes in “I paid for it I own it!” and the other in “I shot you I take it!”

Good idea, Mr Talat. Both 'guarantors' ought to be invited to come and agree an appropriate compensation package to the Cypriot people for the events of 1974 and, in Turkey's case, ever since.

Welcome back, we need you. I hope that all three are made to pay.

I'm sure Greece doesnt want to be a guarantor.

How many Turkish Cypriots can honestly say they think the authorities in the north want to preserve the Cypriot culture, especially with this whole 'Turk of Cyprus' thing.

Turkey is an enemy to ALL Cypriots who are proud of their culture and heritage.

Just as well 'cos she failed her guarantor exams in 1974.

I think the answer is a round number.

Are you one of those people that think all mainland Greeks are represented by the junta?

What ever gives you that idea? Are you a junta apologist? Or one of those people that think all citizens of Turkey are represented by Turkey's military?

And why do you refer only to 'mainland' Greeks? If you're foolish enough to presume I would lump all citizens of Greece together why would I exclude the people of Crete or Rhodes or Corfu et al?
