Are dead taste buds a cure for obesity?

(Another of GR’s lazy summer “inventions”)

Cigarette smokers will know that their taste buds gradually lose their functionality to the point where food no longer tastes as vibrant and as tasty as it once did!

I find myself adding more salt to food, more spices, and evermore sour flavors every year in an effort to get some stimulation from the seemingly tasteless food!

The presence of damaged or dead taste buds also means that the urge to eat because of a memorized tasty experience dissipates over time and this may well be a cure for obesity!

If obese people were to laser-burn a certain percentage of their taste buds I predict that they’d soon re-record (memorize) the new less-tasty sensations for each edible thing, and would gradually start eating less voluntarily!

Regards, GR.

I had a swollen nerve due to influenza last Xmas which made me lose the taste of sweet/fatty things. Consequently, I ate more rice, potatoes, bread and pasta

So, I don't think it's the loss of the "taste" sensation in smokers which makes them lose weight, but the fact nicotine is an appetite suppressant ... plus the relaxation simulated from the same.

A close (GC) friend took up smoking to lose weight ... but after 20 years ... she is still obese  ... but lovely with it.

I think food fulfils the same function in some, as cigarette smoking does in others, and it is just one obsessive lack of control manifestation relative to another ....

Personally, I can only lose weight when the obsession kicks in and I run for hours every day ... just for that endorphin kick! 8)
