Arsenal football school comes to Paphos
By Bejay Browne

CHILDREN IN Paphos are being offered the opportunity to sign up to the first Arsenal soccer school in Cyprus.

The school is affiliated to the Arsenal football club and is one of many across the globe. It’s hope there will be five schools in total in Cyprus, which will teach kids to play football the ‘Arsenal way’, while providing a great showcase arena for talent spotters from across the globe.

Alex Alexandrou, a 45-year-old Paphos man was offered the opportunity to sign up for the first school by a ex-Paphos player, who has the rights for Cyprus. He jumped at the chance.

“As a fan of Arsenal and the father of three boys who love playing, this was an ideal opportunity for me. The aim is to teach the children to play as a team and with respect which is the Arsenal way, but they don’t have to be Arsenal fans,” he said.

Alexandrou will be one of the coaches, along with Gary Kleathous, who are being groomed by the football school to ensure they are training the Arsenal way

According to Alexandrou, Arsenal football schools were interested in coming to Cyprus following the huge success of the schools in Greece. There are currently 24 clubs in Greece and Alexandrou was the first to sign up to the initiative in Cyprus a month ago. His team are called the Arsenal Warriors.

A league will be formed between the Cyprus clubs, with regular matches being played and an elite team being picked. These youngsters will go on to tour the Emirates and other countries in the region.

Alexandrou stressed that there will be ample opportunities for would be stars to be spotted, as coaches affiliated to Arsenal will be making regular visits.

For those kids not making it into the first team, there will be a second team who will play in the already established Paphos-Limassol league.

“There will be something for every child of all abilities,” he stressed.

Children between the ages of five to 16 will be accepted and all nationalities are welcome, although the training takes place in English

Alexandrou commented that the weather is currently too hot for training, but that in early September he would be picking children for the teams, including the Arsenal Warriors.

The try-outs will be in September. Application forms are now available. Training will be on Monday and Thursday, with games on Saturdays.

yeah totally agree , but if I was on holiday and one of the reps said to me, an F.A. qualified coach will be turning up on tues, he will take your 7 year old away on site(ie the tennis courts etc.) for a couple of hours, oooh peace and quite for 2 hrs, for what 15 euros, I would have jumped at it, and I know my son would have too.My plans extend a bit further and more in depth than just taking them off the parents hands for a couple of hours,, holiday awards ,, challenges etc,,,, come on,, what parent and young kid who loves a bit of soccer wouldn't want that on holiday,, I 'm not on about a full camp programme,, just a 2 hr session at some point during the hols,, same as taking a day out trip to see the mountains or go on a boat trip

Boxing yes, football no. Don't understand, like or play the game. Yeap I was one the picked last when we were kids. I only thing I could do well was the defender thing. The others were scared when I was charging...

Being a PEI (physical education instructor) My question is and I'm sure you have the experts answer - when these kids are training dont they have to be wearing proper football boots? or can they train in normal running trainers?

not boots if the ground is to hard,, training shoes are fine

gaz73 found some info for you connected to Cyprus,s football grounds, I would suggest you phone for info rather than email, it would be wise to to actually visit these grounds before any future commitment/employent anyway someone connected here might give you some useful info.

I know nothing about football am afraid but I do know that Cyprus generally is football mad

Football

Due to island's mild winters many football teams from Northern and central European countries use Cyprus for their winter training.

Football grounds with grass can be found in all towns and sea-side resorts. Every town has its own athletic centre.
Most of the first division football teams possess their own centres as well.

a) Makarios Athletic Centre: Lefkosia - Makedonitissa 6km (4miles) South-East from the city centre.
b) G.S.P Sports Complex: Lefkosia - approximately 7 km from the city centre, off the Lefkosia - Lemesos motorway
c) Tsirion Athletic Centre: Lemesos - approximately 5km (3miles) north from the town centre.
d) Olympia Indoor Hall: Lemesos - approximately 5 km (3miles) north from the town centre (next to Tsirion Athletic Centre)
e) Zeno Athletic Centre: Larnaka - approximately 3 km (2miles West, from the city centre.
f) Pafos Athletic Centre: 3km (2miles) east from Pafos town centre.

The following football installations belong to Municipalities and to private companies and are offered for rent by any interested person.
Most of these installations offer all possible facilities for the training of football teams.

The Cyprus Sports Authority along with Cyprus Football Association may give more information on stadium installations:

i looked into this a bit, they have these camps in the emirates,, they seem to be very expensive and elitest,, they are about euros 300 for a 10 lesson stint, approx 75 mins per lesson and they are looking for the future stars so if you are ok, average, good but not that good you have no chance of making there teams

How many British qualified coaches are there now ? must be in excess of 25.000. Met one two weeks ago at the airport in Morocco, also looking for work. I believe 98% of British primary schools also now have accredited football coaches, so do most British villages, towns and cities, and we still can't put together a good national team.
Give me a Italian or Spanish trained coach anyday, at least they can play the game !
