The crossing is opened under these agreed conditions. (my own rough translation from the article)

1) The crossing will be opened under the agreed guidelines of the other crossings
2) The UN will have an upgraded role to play in that area.
3) People passing from the occupation army's millitary base in Kokkina will be escorted by UN personnel. People going into the base will do so in buses on pre-determined schedules.
4) Transport of a reasonable amount of water, food materials of non-millitary content will be allowed.
5) Electricity will be provided to the crossing by the nearest power station.
6) humanitarian situations that require ambulances, fire engines and water supplies will be allowed to pass through the crossings
7) An agreed guideline for events to be allowed to take place at the crossing

Glad to hear that, because a couple of weeks ago I saw a story in the far-right Volkan newspaper in which it was claimed that the vast majority of the residents of this village were against the opening of a crossing there.

Well it's a start and long overdue!

Postby cymart » Fri Jun 26, 2009 4:13 pm

But what about Greek-Cypriots who want to transit Kokkina/Erenkoy in either direction to go from Pakhyammos to Pyrgos and back without that awful detour up into the hills? Will it be allowed?By the way,can anyone except Turkish Cypriots visit Erenkoy from the north or is it still military only?I did ask when I was over there last year and people said to forget it as even their civilians cannot go there, except for the August memorial day.
Anyway,it's still good news and the Greek-Cypriots will no doubt enjoy the lovely strawberries in Yesilirmak-those sea-front tavernas will boom as well but please don't follow the example of some stupid Cypriots on both sides who have raised their prices too much and ruined their reputation. And as for that bar on the end of the jetty, the owner is sitting on a gold mine as I don't think there is another one like it ANYWHERE in Cyprus!

MY HOPES FOR THE FURUTE HAVE BEEN RENEWED NOW THAT THE YESILIRMAK CROSSING POINT HAS OPENED

President Mehmet Ali Talat reaffirmed that he and the leader of the Greek Cypriot administration Dimitiris Hristofias have come to an agreement on the opening of the Yesilirmak crossing point and said they would continue their discussions on territory later on.

Informing the press on his return to the Presidential Palace yesterday about the agreement reached on the Yesilirmak crossing point, President Mehmet Ali Talat said the agreement reached had pleased both sides.

‘I hope that this decision will benefit the people in the area’, he added.

Referring to the negotiations process, President Talat said the opening of the crossing point had renewed his hopes of the future.

Noting that he was very pleased now that the Yesilirmak issue had been solved and it would cease to cast a shadow on the negotiations process, President Talat said now the issue has closed and both sides are pleased with this agreement.

Explaining that he would be meeting with the leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Dimitris Hristofias on Thursday the 2nd of July to continue discussions on territorial issues, President Talat said today the parties continued their discussions on this subject.

Reiterating that a map did not exist currently at the talks, President Talat said only principals had been put forward and they hoped to have concluded their discussions on this issue within 1 to 2 weeks time and move on to other pressing issues.

Answering reporters’ questions regarding the Yesilirmak crossing point, President Talat said it could take 3 to 5 months or even more for the gate to be opened as the roads in the area needed to be fixed.

Noting that there were also financials concerns regarding the crossing point, the President reminded that the European Union would be giving financial support.

‘The crossing into Erenkoy will be opened simultaneously and on important days, crossings will be permitted by land. Within this framework on the 8th of August crossings into Erenkoy will be made using the road in the area’, noted President Talat.

.........................................................................................................

Turkey has welcomed the decision for the opening of the Yesilirmak crossing point.

Turkish Foreign Ministry has described the move as a positive step.

Meanwhile, the European Union officials have expressed their happiness over the opening of the crossing point.

The EU also stated that it is ready to provide financial support for the infrastructure of the area.

Speaking on the issue, the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso expressed his happiness over the decision.

He said the agreement proved that if there is a will there is always a way to solve a problem and said this was a hopeful step for the solution process.

Also commenting on the issue, the EU commissioner for enlargement Olli Rehn said the opening of the Yesilirmak Gate will ease the daily lives of the people and will also help rebuilding the trust between the two communities.

As a leisure driver I will still drive Nic to Pyrkos through the mountains. An excellent, well-surfaced road that takes you in to the forest line with loads and loads and loads of sharp bends.

A very scenic and high road where you have the chance to stop and look down on Occupied Morphou in the plain below. Interestingly, a second Morphou seems have been built alongside but seperate from (old) Morphou. Presumably these are Land Stealers? Am I right in what I post?

Can someone tell me why opening any crossings at this point is so important.? What I mean is, if there's going to be a settlement soon, there won't be any crossings anymore. It will be a open country, so what's the big deal in spending time and energy in opening any crossings at this point which has been closed for the last 35 years. The only time opening any crossing now that would be important, if there isn't a settlement soon, and if that's the case, why are all these people giving each other "High Fives" for, for God sake. If the talks are going great, then within few months, the whole country will be open, unless that is not the case, and that there will be an official crossings between the north state and the south state after a settlement has been reached. Can someone please enlighten me on this one.!
