Block the population transfer

Postby Tim Drayton » Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:12 pm

The following brief item currently appears at the online version of Afrika:

Block the population transfer

The Turkish Cypriot Democracy Association in London, arguing that the political will of the Turkish Cypriots on the island has been usurped, has called on the UN, the EU and United Kingdom official bodies to block the population transfer from the Republic of Turkey. The Democracy Association, stressing that the transfer of population constitutes one of the biggest barriers to lasting peace in Cyprus, points out that this practice has reduced the Turkish Cypriot community to a minority in its own country and destroyed its political will. Association officials, noting that there has also been a breach of the 1950 International Geneva Convention, state that by means of population transfer a serious attack has been mounted on the Turkish Cypriots’ right to self determination. The call to the UN, EU and Britain says: If, in order to achieve peace in Cyprus and to preserve any such peace that is attained, it is important to sustain the existence of the Turkish Cypriot community – which we believe to be important – then prevent the ongoing transfer of population from Turkey to the north of Cyprus.

You risk becoming a crashing bore if you keep repeating this 'M' word. In the interests of good style, I recommend that you acquire a range of synonyms for your preferred 'other'.

The TCs have not been reduced to a "minority in their own country" ... unless they still foolishly wish to continue this stealing of GC land and renaming it as a "country" of their own.

What the TCs have always been, is a minority in the whole of Cyprus.

This Turkish colonisation is a travesty on the GCs, more so than on the TCs ....

My friend, I'll just keep making my point; if you choose to focus on how I choose to denigrate the occupiers rather than on the point I'm trying to make, that's your business.

Spot on.

The highlighted bit is incorrect - don't forget that the only difference between the new mogolo colonists and the old ones is a few dozen generations, and nothing more. All mogoloi in Cyprus are unwelcome colonists, it makes no difference if they've been in Cyprus for 10 years or 410.

It is also a factual error which can only serve to detract from whatever point you imagine you are making.

If you say so. On the flip side, it exposes my bias so at least no one can claim that I have a hidden agenda.
