DISY’S European Parliamentarian, Ioannis Kasoulides, has been elected as one of the ten Vice-Presidents of the European People’s Party (EPP), the largest political group in the European Parliament.
According to an announcement issued by Kasoulides’ press office, during the first meeting of the EPP after the Euro-elections in Brussels on Tuesday, Kasoulides was elected as a Vice-President of the party.
The announcement noted that his appointment was considered “historic and particularly important for Cyprus” in European circles, given the fact that it’s the first time an MEP from a small state like Cyprus, with just two members out of 264 in the EPP, is taking on an institutional role in the party leadership.
Kasoulides secured 121 votes to get into the top echelons of the party presidency. He described his election as “a great honour”, adding, “All the more so given that Cyprus is a small state, with very little electoral influence in the large group of the EPP.”
The former Cyprus presidential candidate noted that few believed a Cypriot MEP could succeed in this election, “but we made it”.
The EPP Presidency is responsible for shaping the party’s policy on a wide range of issues, including security, finance, environment, migration and EU relations with the rest of the world. The competences of each VP will be decided next week in Athens.
Kasoulides said his election defies the view that small countries do not occupy institutional positions.
“We have a great responsibility,” he said, noting the need to respond to the expectations of all the European citizens who voted for the party at the European elections. Kasoulides thanked all his colleagues for their confidence in him.
