CTO action plan on prices

THE CYPRUS Tourism Organisation (CTO) hosted a meeting at its offices this week to discuss the prices of goods and services in the island’s tourist areas. Members of the tourism industry and competition watchdogs took part.

Three short-term measures were agreed during the meeting. Firstly, the CTO will set up a price-monitoring unit focusing on basic tourist products – bottled water, a cup of coffee, simple meals, etc. – with the aim of systematically discouraging overpricing. Data collected by the unit will be displayed on consumer groups’ websites.

Secondly, a website will be set up which will feature special offers for tourists in both Greek and English. This website is intended to be interactive, allowing the general public to post their comments on the available offers and their own experiences.

Finally, the Competition and Consumer Protection Service’s complaints hotline (1429) will be upgraded and have its operating hours extended. The Service has pledged that complaints will be investigated and responded to promptly.

Morning Geoff

The problem though is that CTO can not dictate what prices these businesses charge plus the problems are also down to the prices the business owners pay on rent, taxes and their supplies so they have to pass the price on.

I don't agree with some of the prices being charged one bit and think that CTO should look further than just the restuarant/cafe/shop owners. THe problems runs alot deeper than that.

I have noticed that flight to Cyprus (Paphos) appear to be higher than last year, does anyone else think this?

Cyprus and UAE to sign agreements on taxation and investments
June 24, 2009

Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates are set to sign two agreements to improve economic ties. Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Antonis Paschalides and the Deputy Minister for Financial issues at the Foreign Ministry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Khalid Al Gaith met here and discussed issues concerning investment, tourism, and energy.
Speaking after their meeting, Paschalides said that they agreed to sign agreements on the avoidance of double taxation and protection of investments. In addition they agreed to exchange visits of teams of technocrats and businessmen, he said.
“We both agreed that there is great potential to upgrade and improve relations between the two countries”, he stressed.
Replying to a question, Paschalides pointed out that the number of tourists coming from UAE is increasing. “We expect to welcome more tourists from UAE in the coming years”, he added.
Al Gaith stated that he had a constructive meeting with Paschalides, during which they discussed ways to enhance bilateral economic relations.
“Cooperation prospects for investments in Cyprus or abroad in the fields of energy, agriculture and tourism have been examined”, he said and referred to the agreements to be signed on the avoidance of double taxation and the protection of investments.
The foreign official said that he invited Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) to visit UAE and advertise the tourist product of Cyprus.

The CTO are spoilt for choice of customers .... 8)

If I was Presidentess of Cyprus ... I would not only double the rate for all Hotel accommodation overnight! ... but, I would now also start charging daily Tourism Tax of ... let's say .... 200 Euro per day .... [ a bit like they do in my next favourite country, Bhutan :D ].
