Erdogan: 2009 could be year of Cyprus solution

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 23.JUN.09

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said that 2009 could be the year for the solution of the Cyprus problem.

Erdogan told EU ambassadors in Ankara that Turkey supports the current peace talks on the island but accused the Cyprus Government - which he called "the Greek Cypriot administration" - of placing obstacles in the way of a solution.

He said he expects its European friends to stop Cyprus blocking a solution, adding that when this is done a solution will be found.

He also called upon European ambassadors to help in closing chapters in its accession negotiations and to "open blocked ones".

Erdogan was referring to eight chapters blocked by the European Union because Turkey does not recognise Cyprus and refuses to implement a protocol providing the opening of its ports and airports to Cypriot traffic.

Who are these "European friends" that he is begging to muffle Cyprus for him?

Oracles dear friend ...... Edrogan is a tripper if he thinks that in the next 6 months they can solve a problem that ruined this Island over the past 40 years, at Turkeys doing, manipulation and exploitation of not only gulible TC's but also GC's after therr brutal occupation killing and property exploitation of all Cypriots.

I feel very isolated out here and have no idea what results the talks are having in relation to running a united Cyprus. No one appears to be saying much .... what ever they are coming up with I hope that they are talking about joint fair and equal rights for all Cypriots.

What a tough guy, appealing to his EU "friends" to keep Cyprus on a leash. I guess he doesn't have enough main battle tanks on Cyprus to do the job for him, and his tactics of fly-overs, military drills, and gunboat diplomacy have not yielded results, so it's on to plan 'B'...pleading with the EU leadership!

Erdogan accused the Greek Cypriot side of not being sincere on the negotiations

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (23.06.09) reports that the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan speaking during a luncheon he hosted for ambassadors of the EU member countries accredited in Ankara, referred to the Cyprus problem. Mr Erdogan stated, inter alia, that the only place for the solution of the Cyprus problem is the UN and expressed the hope that the solution of the problem will be reached in 2009.

Reporting on the same issue, Turkish Cypriot daily Halkin Sesi newspaper (23.06.09) writes that Mr Erdogan stated that the solution of the Cyprus problem will be in favor of all parties. The Turkish Prime Minister went on and accused the Greek Cypriot side of not being sincere on the negotiations: Unfortunately, we observed in the new process that the Greek Cypriot side made some initiatives that caused concerns about its sincerity in the ongoing negotiations. In this context, we expect from our European friends that they prevent the GKRY [Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus] from manners and behaviors aim at delaying or blocking the solution, he stated.

What we need is sincerity from all. As far as I can see, Erdogan only wants a solution on his terms. He does not give a Euro for the Cypriots wishes. I forgot, he does not have a Euro. Damn.

Erdogan did not need to ask the europeans for anything. They already know what the GCs are like. Apparently whenever the GC MEPs are about to speak or raise an issue all other MEPs scarper in all directions according to one GC reporter.
Super-patriots find the truth very insulting indeed
By Loucas Charalambous

EVERYTHING that could have been said about the Annan plan, which was rejected in 2004 by the Greek Cypriots, has been said and returning to it might be tiresome for many.

However I think that 2004 was a true turning point in the course of the Cyprus problem, as the rejection of the settlement by the Greek Cypriots has, in my opinion, sealed the fate of the island’s Greek community. It is a very serious matter, which is why it has remained at the centre of political debate, however tedious this might be.

Comments made by the vice president of the European Commission Guenther Verheugen during his visit last week brought the issue to the fore once again. With a couple of phrases, the German, who was the Enlargement Commissioner during our EU accession negotiations, exposed the stupidity of our behaviour.

For instance, we report Turkey about her occupation everywhere, while we ensured that the occupation troops stayed here with our vote. We demand the return of our territories but when these were being returned, we voted that we did not want them. We now want to put obstacles in Turkey’s EU accession path, which was opened with our vote.

Verheugen’s reminder that Turkey was still occupying Cyprus in 2005 when her accession negotiations were given the green light, with the vote of the late president Tassos Papadopoulos, was slap in the face of the hypocrites of our political establishment. They all jumped on his because he had “insulted the memory of our respected leader”.

But where was the insult? He had simply uttered a basic truth. Why did this reminder enrage the super-patriots of DIKO, EDEK and Phileleftheros? Is it because, he made them all look stupid for not having the guts back then to criticise their “respected leader” for backing Turkey’s accession course? At the time, they actually applauded Papadopoulos’ decision.

And I do not buy the claim that Papadopoulos’ memory was insulted by Verheugen. What were the good memories left behind by late president that were being insulted? In 2004, by resorting to scare tactics and a host of politically disreputable methods, he frightened people into voting against the peace plan and promised them that he – the great politician – would secure a ‘European’ solution.

He continued as president for another four years and instead of a ‘European’ solution, the only thing he achieved was to cement partition and to isolate Cyprus internationally. This is even being said, now, by the leadership of AKEL, which had made him president in 2003.

Essentially, Verheugen merely expressed the view that all foreigners have about us. This is why not a single foreigner, of those who have dealt with the Cyprus problem, has ever defended or justified our peculiar behaviour. The UN Special Representative, Alexander Downer, is the latest example.

Last year, one of our MEPs told me the following: “They are all fed up with us. They do not want to see us. As soon as they realise that we are preparing to raise some issue, they disappear. ‘There go the Cypriots again,’ they say between them.”

This should be borne in mind by our new MEPs who have already started sharpening their knives, in the false belief that the European Parliament exists to deal with our stupidities.

you can't shoot them down for goodness sake. There might be Cypriots in civilian planes. Although if they wanted to travel they should cross the border and go to larnaca or paphos for that where an international airport is in effect!

If it has turkish people in it that simply illegally occupy this land, well shooting them down wont spoil my day, ill tell you that.
