This is one more manifestation of the Stalinist methods of the Turks. Change names, falsify facts, put a spin on evrything and hope no one notices. Meanwhile they want to become members of the EU and insist they fulfill all requirements. Go figure!
You suprise me coming out with that old platitude that dates back to the dark days of the 12 September Junta. Many contributors to this forum harp on like records stuck in their groove, but I always had you down as quite a well informed chap.
Let us look at one or two recent developments in connection with the Kurdish question in Turkey:
1. The state broadcaster TRT is now regularly broadcasting in the Kurdish language.
2. Next academic year a Kurdish language and literature department will open at the University of Mardin.
3. Quite recently in a landmark decision a public prosecutor decided that there were no grounds for prosecution in relation to a complaint that the pro-Kurdish DTP party had used Kurdish in its election campaign. The prosecutor argued that, even though the election law contained a provision banning the use of any language except Turkish in electoral propaganda, this provision along with similar provisions in any other law has lost its validity in the light of recent developments towards recognising the use of the Kurdish language in relations with Kurdish-speaking citizens.
4. Germany has recently stated that Kurds no longer face oppression in Turkey and has told all Kurdish assylum seekers that they may safely return to their country. This ruling has been upheld in two appeal courts.
Please try to follow the news a little!
Actually, in line with these developments, I would not be surprised if Kurdish is eventually granted official status in the north of Cyprus, given the large number of speakers of this language now resident there!
