Coming to Cyprus......yyyeeesssssss!!!

Postby NewDebs » Fri Jun 19, 2009 8:57 am

Hello All,

As this is my first visit to the Cyprus Forum,i would just like to say Hello from sunny London and say what a nice bunch of people you all sound!!

I will be travelling to Cyprus for the first time at the end of August and so would really appreciate your tips and advice on a few things.
We ( myself and my partner, late 30's/early 40's,not saying who is who,ha ha ) will be staying at the Elia Latchi Holiday Village on an all-inclusive basis.Has anyone stayed there from the forum?..What are your thoughts?
Nice place?,nice food?..nice area??

We have booked a car for the day after we arrive and would like to see all/some of the beautiful sights that Cyprus has to offer.where should we visit?..We both like walking..Also beaches, where are the best ones?

I have heard that Cyprus can be ''quite warm'' in August  Any tips?

Thanks to all and look forward to your advice :D

Hi NewDebs

I do not know this location but I found this write up on the Net:

When arriving to the resort after an hour drive from the airport, the village was nothing less than a dissapointment. When driving through latchi i actually said to myself as we drove past, please dont turn in here, but we did.
The reception staff were hardly welcoming but maybe that was just because there wasnt a smile on any of our 7 faces! After walking up a very steep hill to our apartment we got into our rooms, which smelt a little on the outside but were nicely layed out and were clean. Some days we didnt know the cleaner had even been as there was no difference apart from the bed being made!
The pool was lovely and one good thing i can say about the village was that there was quite a proportion of british there which made a great seventh night before we left, althought it still didnt stop me from wanting to leave as i couldn't wait to get home and eat some food apart from chips, fish fingers and chicken nuggets (if they were chicken!).
The picture in the brochure showed a sandy beach across the road from the village. Well, not quite. After a road, a row of boulders and then the sea was hard to make out. So we were fairly pinned to the village. We did however, manage to have a lovely boat trip which was quite cheap which took us around the coast and we also swam in the sea.
After visiting Royal Wings hotel this year, a 5 star hotel which cost the same for a week in All Inclusive, i have now realised the entertainment at elia latchi village was VERY poor! A tiny stage with very limited funds but the entertainment team were friendly.
Overall a dissapointing holiday which looked alot better in the brochure. I wouldnt not recommend this to anyone unless it has a vast improvement!

Advice:Dissapointing!

Latchi (or Latsi) is pleasant enough, with some nice tavernas set by the sea; so, 'all in' or not, get out and try them - the Holiday Village menu sounds horrendous! The area is relatively quiet; nice sea views; walks or off roading in the nearby Akamas Penisular, or (2 hour) drive to the Troodos Mountains to get cool, beautiful small church at Pomos about 30 minutes away - again overlooking the sea. Drive into Pafos (1 hour) for busy nighlife or drinks/refreshment by the harbour.
Take a boat trip from Latsi, do some watersports. Pafos Bird and Nature park is worth a visit - stay for lunch too.

Yes, it will be hot; stay out of the sun unless you want to look like a beatroot tourist, wear a hat and hi factor, take water with you, rest in the afternoon (it is currently 32C and will be hotter by late August).

If you have a problem there, mention you know 'Oracle'!

I'm sorry your holiday village sounds poor (thanks Lana  ) .. but you won't be staying there much as there is soooooo much to see and do! :D

Go to Latchi harbour, ask for Spiro (Captain Morgan) and he will set you up with a boat to tour the coastline off the Akama. He'll also tell you how to get to Adonis Waterfall, which is essential as the best way to get cool in August. You come out 10 years younger every time you take a dip 8)

When you have the car, go to Pomos Bay for the day. It has a nice restaurant for lunch just off the beach.

Also head for Stavros tis Psohas (?) for a BBQ (buy a disposable one at any of the supermarkets), under the shade of Pine trees ....

It will be too hot for any of the wonderful treks around the area unless you set off about 5am.

I'm sure others will add more ....

Hi Newdebs

(Didn't think Oracle - who knows the area better than I -would find me out here!). £ v € exchange rate has done British tourists any favours, however, but £ has risen 18% this year, so things could be worse.

One last thing; is you tour company organising your transport to Latsi - a taxi could cost you €100, I would guess.

Hei NewDebs.
I will not say much about the resort. The area though is great for those into nature. 2 big pluses for me: The Akamas peninsula and Paphos forest.

If you want to find more about Cyprus nature - beaches, trails, etc, you can visit my website : www.natureofcyprus.org . I also just published a book guide "Guide on Nature of Cyprus" . Again, I think the region where you are going has a lot of fantastic places to offer.
If you are into walking, you can find beautiful places to walk even during the hottest days here. Some routes are shades in the forest. And of course, if you walk anywhere early in the morning or late in the afternoon it will not be too hot.

I hope you enjoy the holiday.

Hi Phivos

Thank you for your reply. The area sounds lovely,do enjoy the sights and sounds of nature so sounds perfect.

Not saying much about the resort sounds dubious ( worrying) Like there's something you know but.....don't really want to say??

Thank you for replying and appreciate any advice we recieve.....
