Cyprus protests air traffic violations by Turkey

Cyprus’ Permanent Representative to the UN, Minas A. Hadjimichael, in a letter to the UN Secretary General, protested new violations of the international air traffic regulations and the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus by military aircraft of the Turkish Air Force recorded from 1st April until 28 May 2009.

In a letter, which is dated 5 June 2009 and was circulated on Tuesday as a document of the General Assembly and of the Security Council, Hadjimichael strongly protested the violations by Turkey and called for their immediate cessation.

He said “Turkey’s policy of non-observance of rules and regulations governing international aviation continues to gravely jeopardize flight safety and perpetuate insecurity and apprehension on the island”.

Furthermore, he added, “Turkey’s persistent provocations, aimed at consolidating the de facto division of Cyprus and further strengthening the illegal secessionist entity in the occupied areas, seriously undermine all efforts towards reunification and reconciliation''.

Such policies and actions, he noted in the letter, ''provide ample demonstration of the irresponsible behaviour of a country that now serves as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations”.

Hadjimichael said it was ''encouraging to see that in the recent report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Operations in Cyprus (S/2009/248), there was a reference to some of the aforementioned violations by Turkey''.

''The Government of Turkey should heed the call of the international community, abide by the Charter of the United Nations and respect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, thus contributing to the creation of the required conditions for the achievement of a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem'', the Cypriot diplomat noted.

So now the invaders are trying to intimidate us in order to consolidate the de facto division of Cyprus....

These are the people who want to join the EEC?

They are going a long way to impress other states with this sort of behaviour.

Pity they are not warned by shots across their cockpits and then shot down on further violations.

They refuse to bow to your attempts to isolate them and they fly in defiance of your attempts.
Would you like to speculate which flights were deliberate provocations by military jets looking for a response and how many "intrusions" were routine civil and military flights into/out of TRNC.
Shooting down of civilian planes is something only North Korea would consider, you silly boy.

Not that I am advocating shooting down of civilian airlines, but it has happened before: Korean Airlines flight 007 and Korean Airlines flight 902. In the case of flight 902, the airliner was intentionally shot down after the plane had been visually identified as a civilian airliner by the pilot of the interceptor who shot it down.

So crazier things have happened.

Let us not forget the Iranian one shot by US.

is there a glitch in the Matrix?

RoC will not shoot down a Turkish airliner. To do so, assuming the craft in question is on a regular route, would be an act of mass murder/terrorism and full provocation to war.

If its Military jets, by all means shoot them down. As Clint Eastwood would say "make my day punk"

The Hellenic Air Force did just that. Did the tourkomogoloi have the balls to do anything about it? No; they got themselves out of having to respond by claiming that the shoot-down was accidental.
