With a range of only 6km, the only thing these missiles would be able to shoot down would be a Cessna aircraft. It would be an enormous fluke if an F-16 was destroyed by a Mistral. An F-16 could fly over 1,000 Mistrals at 18,000Ft and be 99.9% safe. The only way to counter an F-16 is with another F-16 or M2000 at altitudes greater than 18,000FT should the attacking aircraft fear the Mistral.

As a matter of fact, even the S300, Gecko and Tor are ineffective against air attack. These systems are easy pickings for HARM A2G attack. Once they turn their radar on, then it is bye-bye! Good target practice for the pilots though.

There is no SAM or Air Defense umbrella that is able to defeat a modern air force.

Have you heard off Chaff Flares GatTouri!

Bye-bye GatTouri!...

It's the impotency of your brain you should be worried about.

All modern missiles, including Europe’s top 3 (Exocet/Milan/Mistral) have ECCM to defeat electronic protective measures or “jamming” if you like so quit wasting people’s time with assumptions idiot!

Read that quote again and ask yourself why…

Mistral entered series production in 1989 and is now deployed by 37 armed forces of 25 countries. Over 16,000 missiles have been ordered. In June 2001, the last of 45 ATLAS launchers and 9 MCP with Mistral 2 missiles were delivered to Hungary.

The world is stupid for investing in these and you are smart Paphitis?

The Minstrel is refferred to as "The Poor Man's Missile System".

The kind that real powers can't be bothered wasting their time with because they are inneffective...Image

Kindly move to the jokes section where you belong...

During the last 2 days Turkish planes are flying 350mtrs over Agathonisi .

The only thing which maybe Turks not taking into account is the reaction of local hunters, since Greek Ministry's reaction expected to be a notam to Turkey and then allow the plane to depart!!!

Do you have a copy of this NOTAM?

It would make interesting reading...

An enemy violates sovereign airspace and our response is to send them a NOTAM?? Would a clearance to land follow suit?

Paphitis, i do not have a copy of the NOTAM since insident do not happen yet however do you remember any other way of reaction from our politicians during the last 37 years?Only local hunters will be a real problem to the Turkish plane.

You had me very worried there for a second Epsilon...

From your source I obtained the following data:

with the missile at a distance of about 15m from the gunner, the sustainer motor ignites and accelerates the missile towards the target at Mach 2.5. The range of the missile is up to 6km, which it reaches in 9s.

With a range of up to 6 kms, the most you could possibly expect is to shoot down a helicopter, and even this would be a long shot.

There is no way a Minstral could even dent the fuselage of an F-16 flying at 18,000FT. If it was an effective weapon, then there would be more countries purchasing it than just Cyprus, Estonia and Hungary.

The Minstral is just a fire cracker I am afraid... Plenty of PFFFFT......clunk..anti climax really, but no match against any modern air force...

How many F-16s have these deadly weapons shot down?

Face it GattouRi!....Cyprus needs the HAF.... :D

Absolute rubbish! 5-6km away is plenty of time for missiles that can travel past Mach2.

Rubbish.

The Mistral is the fighter jet FUCKER and it doesn’t care what brand or model… F16, F14, F22, once it locks onto a fighter jet it’ll turn it into spare parts 90-95% of the times!

Go back to sweeping the runway dude...

It is even worse than I expected a it's range is between 500m and up to 6 kms and only reaches an altitude of 3000m or about 9000FT. :?

Dimensions:
Missile Weight
18.7kg
Missile Length
186cm
Missile Diameter
90mm
Fin Span
18cm
Weapons:
Warhead
3kg high-explosive with tungsten ball projectiles
Fuses
Contact fuse and laser proximity fuse
Guidance
Infrared passive homing
Propulsion
Solid rocket booster
Performance:
Speed
Mach 2.5
Range
500m to 6km
Altitude
3,000m

This thing could hardly shoot down a kit plane let alone a Cessna...

I am sure an F-16 would fly below 9000FT just to play cat and mouse....

There are so many countermeasures for the Mistral, you might as well sell them off to Al Qaeda so they can do you proud by shooting down an Airliner or two...

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... s/ircm.htm

APEC also had this to say about the Mistral:
DUE TO ITS SHORT RANGE (AVERAGING 5,000 m.) ITS USE IS
MAINLY LIMITED TO THE MOMENT THE AIRCRAFT APPROACHES
FOR LANDING OR DURING TAKE OFF (LOW ALTITUDE ALTITUDE).

Apparently The Cyprus hunters federation want to by some Mistrals as well....That way, when they shoot some Ortikia, they are cooked instantaneously and are fresh for Choirokitian connoisseurs....Image

Ortikia anyone?

Where do you get these stupid assumptions from Turkish magazines?

Not assumptions at all and being as I understand only a few words of Turkish it would hardly be from Turkish magazines. The source is an impeccable one, an RAF Squadron Leader friend attached to NATO. I can't remember his exact words but basically he was saying that they were A1.

Sorry that this is not what you wanted to hear but as I am in a good mood I won't spoil your day by letting you know what he thought of Greek pilots.

Ciller practically begged Clinton on the Imia crisis ffs...the generals shot their pants on the day and got her to beg Clinton to intervene...read Clintons Biography and then lets talk...
