Military service greek cypriots

Postby nomoarmy » Thu Jun 18, 2009 12:41 pm

For all of you guys out there that are in the army or going to the army soon. I wanna hear from you. what are your experiences...what have you heard about how things are once you are in. Is it a waste of time, does bad shit go on in there? How would you feel if instead of 2 years you did only one. Do you think its fair or sensible to be taken away from your brain at such a critical time after working so hard at school to pass exams etc only to put your brain to sleep and expose it to extreme stress for two crucial years of your life. Do you think this gives women in Cyprus an advantage over you in the Cyprus job market once you do finish your studies. Curious.

It would be interesting to hear what Turkish Cypriot young people think about their system of miltary service as well.

Just finished mine (officially have 2 more months to go with jailtime but hopefuly most will be wiped out) Not a waste of time at all, I'm never going to forget my experience there. Although it might be because of the weapon selection I made to serve. Best thing for a guy to do after school. Have a bonding and a brotherhood with my guys that will last a lifetime. Looking forward to "civilian life".

You have a very good attitude towards serving your country.

Pity some others don't see things the way you do.

Well done Gregory. :D

Sexual discrimination having males only doing military service? Racial descrimination in people living here from other countries don't have to do the service?

It is a waste of time but it is a duty for the country. So just do it. Better to waste 2 years rather than being known as a coward for the rest of your life.

I have never come across anyone that had a good word to say about it. Normally the youngsters do everything they can to get out of it. Its actually a great encouragement for the youngsters to get a university degree so they can serve as officers or sergeants, which is rather easier, which probably explains the reason for such high percentage of education in Cyprus.

We would all rather not do the military service, but we have to for the well-known reasons. Hopefully one day our children will not have to go through it.

Under the current circumstances it should not be reduced either.

A six-month mandatory military service for women should also be enforced.

I know that lots of young Turkish Cypriot men enrol as university students because this allows them to postpone their military service, and then don't even bother to attend their courses. I think there is a good deal of truth in what YFred says.
