President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Mehmet Ali Talat met with the Finnish Foreign Minister Alexander Stubb (yesterday).
Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, the Finnish Foreign Minister said he was very pleased with his meeting with the Talat.
Noting that he wasn’t able to meet with the Talat during his own visit to Cyprus, Mr. Stubb said ‘as my meeting with Mr. Hristofias my meeting with Talat was very constructive. We are a strong supporter of a united Cyprus’.
‘We also support the ongoing negotiations in Cyprus and we hope that a solution will be found by the end of the year’, he added.
Noting that Finland supported a united Cyprus being a member of the European Union Mr. Stubb said ‘we hope that the solution plan to be found to the Cyprus problem will be put to a referenda before the Presidential election in North Cyprus’.
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat for his part said that he had found the opportunity to express his views to the Finnish foreign Minister during the meeting and reminded that the Turkish Cypriot side had found it difficult to convey its views to the European Union.
‘Because we are not a part of EU institutions we are unable to convey our views to the EU’, he added.
Referring to the importance of these opportunities the President said that he had held a very beneficial meeting with the Foreign Minister.
‘I too share the same views with Mr. Stubb and hope that a united Cyprus will join the European Union and a solution will be found to the Cyprus problem soon’, said President Talat and added that his aim is to find a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem.
Pointing to the importance of Mr. Stubbs statement that he hoped a solution will be found before the Presidential elections in the north, Talat said ‘this goes to show you that the European Union does not know about the Cyprus problem.
‘The EU only knows what the Greek Cypriot representatives to the EU are telling them. There are many difficulties and we are trying to overcome these through our contacts abroad’, said Talat.
Earlier yesterday Talat came together with directors of the Crisis Management Initiative which is headed by the former President Maati Arthisaari.
He also met with former Foreign Minister - Deputy Erkki Tuomioja.
