How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Makarios used to do that , search for all minions in the political fields and befriend them , we haven't changed have we.

Having done business in Serbia all I can say is that the drive these people have in reforming this country is unprecedented. Serbia belongs and deserves to be in the EU right now far more than Bulgaria and ROmania who got in through American favouritism.

As for being friendly with them, then I don't see what is wrong with agreeing on a matter of a highly critical principle to our cause. Specifically that parts of a nations sovereign territory can not be removed willy nilly whenever the Yanks announce they require another place to park their F16's.

I dont harbour any sinister motives against the people of Serbia , and yes they should join Europe .
My answer was in reply to the individual referring to them as our " brothers"
You must recognise however that Serbia has very little , if any , influence
in serving the best interests of Cyprus.

They are our "brothers" in the sense that we and they are Christian Orthodox, we shared a common struggle in enduring and throwing off the mongolottoman occupation, and both still struggle with the remnants of this occupation via minority populations we'd rather all just rather not have.

A vote is a vote whether its in the UN or the EU, and since there does not seem to be a significant opportunity cost to this principled friendship then whats wrong with getting closer ties?

Not to mention of course the problem of the Serbs retaliating with a recognition of the "trnc" if Cyprus were to ever recognise Kosovo.

Some 75 nations have so far recognized Kosovo , amongst them , USA , UK , FRANCE, AUSTRALIA, ITALY, GERMANY , SWITZERLAND, BELGIUM , AUSTRIA , POLAND , SWEDEN, NORWAY, JAPAN, CANADA , UNITED ARAB EMIRATES, SAUDI ARABIA , BULGARIA TOO who doesnt take her orders from Greece , and scores more.
The UN as well as the EU is about to grant official recognition , so whether the RoC recognizes Kosovo or not is utterly immaterial.
The world has spoken.
As for the assumption that if Cyprus follows the rest of the world and recognizes Kosovo , Serbia might just recognize the "trnc" all I can say what nonsense !!
Religion should not in any way influence our choice of friends , INTERESTS OF CYPRUS TAKE PRIORITY OVER ALL ELSE.
Recognize what most of the world already does !

Milt, with all due respect...Are you nuts?

How will you go in international fora and explain to the world that the "trnc" should not be recognised because it violates the sovereignty of Cyprus and at the same time compromise the sovereignty of another UN Member?

Cyprus and Serbia have always been good allies, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Also, Cyprus is unable to recognise Kossovo because it would have undesirable implications for the Cyprus problem. It is as simple as that.

I guess countries like Russia, China, India, Israel, Spain, South Africa, Greece, Brazil, SLovakia, Romania, Bosnia, Argentina, Egypt etc are also wrong for not following the rest and recognising Kosovo
