Turkey stages Cyprus drill amid dispute

16th June 2009

Turkish and Turkish Cypriot forces are staging a joint search and rescue exercise in Cyprus amid a dispute with Greek Cypriots over oil and gas exploration off the island.

Turkish Cypriot forces chief Maj. Gen. Abdullah Recep says the three-day drill on the ethnically-split island is not a show of force. But he added that Cyprus' search for mineral deposits off its south coast ignores the rights of breakaway Turkish Cypriots.

The exercise started Tuesday.

Greek Cypriot government officials say they have protested to the United Nations and the European Union.

The claim today was made by a Turkish General that The GC's want Karpasia because there's oil off its coast. The comment of the day came later though when he said that there is more chance of the Greeks getting Smyrni than Karpasia.

Izmir. You know you really need to brush up on your history. Its not that long ago that Smyrni was a vibrant Greek city.

In all the history books TC and UK I have never heard it called anything else. You live and learn. Although I think he was exaggerating a tad. Karpaz was on the cards, to be given back, but the economic zone of the med sea is another matter. I don't envy your position, you will have to make the mountain come to you, you've got more chance of that.

ooohhhhh poor breakaway kids are having their rights ignored by Cyprus exercising her rights to oil exploration within its sea zone .... I wonder if they have ignored the rights of other Cypriots by inviting Turkey and its army to keep them out of their homes for the past 30 years????? hhhhmmmmmm
