Greek Speakers Here!

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Postby Leon » Wed Jun 22, 2005 9:21 am

That proves my point, cannedmoose. When I wrote 'Greeks Here' I'm referring to the whole Greek-speaking community, whether you're in England, Cyprus, Albania, Sweden, Germany, South Africa or USA; anywhere in the world! And Greek-Cypriots understand and accept when I say 'Greeks Here' that means them too I wrote 'Turkish-Cypriots Here' in fear of being brandished racist, fascist and biased if I wrote only 'Turkish Here'  . I've changed the title of this thread, and when I write Cypriots, I include Turkish speakers aswell, providing they speak Greek.

I hope you understand where I'm coming from; I don't want this thread to turn into a virtual slanging match or place to discriminate one another. And put it this way, moosey, if I had something I wanted to say to Turkish-Cypriots then I would say it so they would understand loud and clear, not in a general topics thread in Greek.

Should we write in Greek fonts or Greeklish? Since many of you Greeks were born/brought up abroad you speak the language and don't read it, plus those who can might not have Greek fonts installed on their computers.

Well, where is the need now to communicate this in Greek? For such small talk you do not need to discuss whether there should be Greek/Turkish posts be allowed in this forum or not. You can have this in lots of other forums, as pointed out already many times, or even in a silly kids chat.
I fully agree with Cannedmoose's point of view. Those who wish to communicate in their own language can do so in various other existing fora. I believe its the greatest advantage of this forum here, that it is strictly in English.

Wouldnt it be better if Cyprus-Forum could also attract so many users and on the same time be a bicommunal forum???

This proves my point Yianni. Why is this forum you mention so heavily populated? Because it's composed of people communicating in Greek. Yes, the Cyprus Forum could be swamped by 10,000 extra people by removing the language restriction, but how many of these 10,000 would choose to communicate in English? Only a minority I would surmise. You would therefore have a situation where you have large groups communicating solely in Greek or Turkish and a smaller group in English... and never the twain would meet.

just one simple question: why would/should we want to change this forum into something that already exists elsewhere? Or am I missing the point here???

Leon, we all know who you are and what you support. I am with moosie in this topic. Other languages except ENGLISH should not be allowed.
