North Cyprus ‘One of the most secure countries”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avci took part on the Dispatches Programme on ADA TV, where he made important statements regarding the Cyprus solution process, the economy and the elections.
* Avci: “All British residents should know that their properties are under the guarantee of the State, and they should know they have invested in one of the most secure countries.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avci took part on the Dispatches programme on ADA TV, hosted by Kerem Hasan, where he made important statements concerning the Cyprus problem, internal political developments and the policies of his Freedom and Reforms Party (ORP). Avci said they had fully supported the solution process in Cyprus, and said it was important for the Turkish side to remain at the negotiating table and to continue efforts at bringing about a comprehensive solution in Cyprus.
Avci also put forward the policies of the ORP on a variety of issues concerning the TRNC and the economic situation of the country, the voting rights of the Turkish Cypriots living abroad and the concerns of foreign residents in Northern Cyprus. Whilst referring to the property issue, Avci said that all immoveable properties and estates were under the guarantee of the State.
Properties are safe and secure
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avci made exclusive statements in relation to the property concerns of foreign residents who own properties in Northern Cyprus. Avci said, “British residents and indeed foreign residents must be comfortable, because we as Turkish Cypriots want to strengthen our economy. Until a just solution is found, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will continue on its path of development. The properties are assured and guaranteed by the State.”
TRNC safest place to live in
Whilst continuing his message to the British residents of Northern Cyprus, Turgay Avci said the TRNC was “the safest, relaxed place to live; the country is the most secure place to live in when compared to the rest of the world.”
“I wish them a happy stay and we are very happy to have them here.” He said it was important that a just solution was found to the Cyprus problem, which safeguarded the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people and which was bi-zonal. Avci said the ORP placed great importance on the economic development of Northern Cyprus, irrespective of whether a solution could or could not be found.
Global economic crisis
Whilst being asked his reactions to criticisms from opposition parties that the Government was incompetent in handling the economy, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Turgay Avci said that there was an unravelling global economic crisis taking place. “The crisis is so deep that it has penetrated even the wealthiest countries, like the US. They have taken precautions and so have we, as the Government. The opposition deliberately ignores the global aspects of the problem. It is not an isolated phenomenon. We are a part of the global community and the global effects have been felt here, but we have taken measure to limit the negative effects,” he said.
Voting rights for diaspora
Turgay Avci also put forward his views in relation to the affording of voting rights to the Turkish Cypriot diaspora abroad. Avci said they had pledged that they would assign two seats in the Parliament, to represent the Turkish Cypriot diaspora. “We want to embrace our people living abroad, and we are the only party that has put forward such a concrete proposal on the matter. We pledge that we will assign one seat solely for the Turkish Cypriots in Australia. We must take into consideration the importance of our community abroad,” he said.
