President Chritofias presents the GC property proposals

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

President Chritofias presents the GC property proposals

Postby DT. » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:06 pm

Apologies for interrupting the important  discussions on whether Cyprus's allies have a good human rights track record or not and how they fare with the country currently occupying under millitary force 37% of its territory, but here's a little something regarding the Cyprus problem.

According to today's headlines on Phileleftheros
Christofias has presented plans regarding the return of 110,000 refugees to the South state of a future federation. The areas included in the return amongst others are Salamina, Apostolos Andreas and Apostolos Barnabas.

Talat has responded by stating that there will have to be strong financial incentives for the TC's involved in the move.

Well Turkey caused the problem by taking "too much" land and re-populating the north. TURKEY SHOULD FUND THE "INCENTIVE"

Well, this is a lot better than Denktash's famous statement about not returning a single pebble.

It's encouraging to seen that perhaps "in principle" Talat is prepared to return these areas Having to fund such a move will leave a nasty taste in the mouth of most GCs who will not be predisposed to sharing power with the spoilt brats of the north.

First major sign of weakness on the Turks' part :) ... They would not be offering compromise, now, if they weren't scared that they are going to have to give back the lot!

Hang in there President Christofias :D ... You are doing a great Global job, rallying support ... and soon all will return to normality without rewarding the blackmailing Turkish thieves a penny or an inch of our Island ....

Wtf  The full cost of any resettlement should be born by Turkey. They are the ones who instigated the ethnic cleansing, are maintaing the injustice by the brute force of a military occupation and have committed war crimes in importing people to entrench the theft of land amongst many other things.

Hold on a minute. All Turkish Cypriots who are currently living in Greek Cypriot property must be the owners, or the heirs of the owners, of Turkish Cypriot property currently in the government controlled areas. This is where the funding can come from - i.e. if they wish to stay in the north, sell their properties and give them the proceeds.

That may be so Tim, but the GC's left much more land behind than the TC's. In the aftermath of a settlement, the land in the north will instantly be priced to the same level as the south. There needs to be massive external funding for disposessed owners to get redress.

The only viable way is for as much land to be returned to GC control as possible. Even then, external funding will still be needed.

What they were given in the occupied areas is much more valuable than what they own. That is the problem. Otherwise what you say would work perfectly.
