Fresh Threats from Turkey ....

Postby Oracle » Thu Jun 11, 2009 6:18 pm

Verbal warnings:

Turkey chides Cyprus over oil and gas exploration

11th June 2009

Burak Ozugergin, the foreign ministry spokesman, reiterated Thursday that Turkey was determined to protect the rights of Turkish Cypriots in the island, warning Cyprus against unilateral moves.

Two recent physical threats from Turkey:

27 May 2009

While the Cypriot-flagged vessel EDT ARES was carrying out maintenance on an installation for the collection of meteorological information off the south-west coast of Cyprus, upon request of the competent authorities of the Government of Cyprus, it was approached by the Turkish corvette BEYKOZ F/503 asking to be informed of the work that it was performing.

“It was harassed by the same corvette for a number of hours before the latter eventually departed”, Hadjimichael adds.

28 May 2009

Turkish fighter jet (CN-235) flew to the above area, in violation of Cypriot airspace, and issued radio warnings to EDT ARES to withdraw “as it was in Turkish territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone of Turkey”.

EDT ARES explained that it had been mandated to carry out maintenance work by the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and that it would remain in the area until its work was completed but the Turkish jet continued to issue warnings to the said vessel to withdraw.

You have nothing to worry about, Cyprus is in the EU, you have plenty to hide behind.

Fred is right ,Cyprus is very much a part of the EU , Turkey would be committing political suicide in taking action against what the entire world sees as a legitimate act by the RoC. Sabre rattling more likely .

At what point and how should the EU intervene in this "sabre rattling" harassment and violations of air space?

Do we just wait for an "accident"?

We all know it's all bluster from a Bag of Smelly Wind bankrupt state who's Expansionist Dreams have led it down a path from where it will find it very difficult to back down without a disastrous loss of face. A Bankrupt Malfunctioning State that looks villainously at other people's prospective oil revenues to get it out of the shite.

Call their bluff.

The USA has an interest in sourcing new supplies of energies , such supplies if derived from a friendly European Union nation would be all the more attractive and worth preserving and naturaly protecting.
If the estimates of oil reserves are even half accurate then Cyprus would in a position to be in charge of its own destiny for the first time in its history , that is provided of course that a sensible and predominantly self interest approach is adopted. The benefits to the entire island would be enormous , all citizens benefiting from this natural resource .
