Greece’s Human Rights Portfolio…

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

"A number of human rights abuses continued to plague Greece during 1998, especially regarding the treatment of the Turkish and Macedonian minorities, as well as of migrants. There continued to be government-imposed restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of worship. The government of Prime Minister Costas Simitis took some positive steps, including legalizing the presence of more than 400,000 mostly-Albanian migrants and abolishing article 19 of the citizenship law."
"As in previous years, the government recognized only one minority, the “Muslim” minority living in Thrace and protected under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. The government continued to deny the existence of a Turkish minority, although most “Muslims” identify themselves as Turks, regardless of their ethnic origin. In August, the speaker of the parliament stated that the “Muslim and Christian population” of Thrace should be "homogenized.” Ethnic minorities that are not officially recognized often suffered restrictions on their freedom of expression and association. Among these ethnic minorities legally denied recognition are Macedonians."

Just to show you what kind of bullshit your reproducing in this thread ... here are the Greek election results that took place this past Sunday :

http://www.ekirikas.com/elections.cfm

The Rainbow party that speaks on behalf of this so called Makedonski minority in Greece obtained less than 5000 votes or 0.09 percent throughout all of Greece. If you consider this a minority then guess what, we better give some minority rights to the Sri lankans that reside here...and a whole lot of other people.

You take the biscuit, GatTouri!

Foreigners shot on the border, asylum-seekers detained in metal containers, Roma forcibly evicted from their homes in Athens -- these are some of the examples of consistent pattern of human rights violations, Amnesty International reveals in a report today.

The report, Out of the spotlight: The rights of foreigners and minorities are still a grey area, highlights the failure of the Greek authorities to combat discrimination.

Are you by any chance denying all these reports of Greek HR abuses by HR international authorities?

If so then provide your evidence, if not then hang your head in shame and shut up!

As for Cyprus... I'm waiting for your thread that'll make your point.

Just as I thought… you’ve got nothing to justify Greece and nothing to condemn Cyprus with.

Bye-bye…

PS: Leave it hanging until I tell you…

Erm....Sorry to say it my friend, but there is no nation in this world that has not got any human rights blemish against it from Amnesty International or some other Human Rights pressure groups... :?

Do some more research please.... :D Or are you deliberately trying to showcase your hypocrisy just to prove your massive patriotism over the internet?

But what I will say, is that both Cyprus and Greece DO have a particularly good, or shall I say a particularly benign human rights record when compared to most other countries in this world. Quite clearly, both countries are doing a good job at respecting human rights, and any blemish only proves that both Cypriots and Greeks are only human and as such are also susceptible to a bit of racism just like all other imperfect nations.

No nation is perfect. But Cyprus and Greece are up there with the very best. :)

I decided on a better route. The problem is you've left so many gaping holes in all the arguments that I'm having difficulty in choosing how to rip everything you've been saying apart.

eg the fact that you complain about identity "human rights violations" of Greece when it comes to not recognising Muslim Greeks as Turks and yet you base your entire argument on CYprus on the need to throw off the G from the C and the T from the C so that we all exist peacefully within the Cypriot ethnicity.

If it were possible you know perfectly well that we would bend over backwards and do back flips if we could list everyone as Cypriots and not need to differentiate. Yet here you are trying to beef up another of your "passion" arguments with a logic that has more holes than a sieve.

As you've listed many times before your distaste for ethnicity allows almost anyone who has a connection, affection and loyalty to a land to adopt its "ethnicity". By your definition then you should be Greece's biggest supporter in their attempt to promote Greek citizenship over all other loyalties a person has.

I'll leave it here for now.
