A petition to Stop Human Rights Abuse of Immigrants in Greece

We the undersigned urge the leaders of the EU to respond to the recent demonstration of appalling discrimination and human rights violation by Greek authorities towards Albanian immigrants. The recent video of two immigrants slapping each other at the orders of a Greek police officer is an unacceptable example of institutional violence against the rights and dignity of human beings in Greece. We call on European institutions to act and stop this abuse!

Allegations of Abuse in Greece

"Some people are inherently racist here. Therefore, I would not say they would condone mistreatment of immigrants by the Greek police, but they would not be particularly surprised by it. And they would certainly not be up in arms about it"

The Macedonians are NOT happy with Greece…

"A number of human rights abuses continued to plague Greece during 1998, especially regarding the treatment of the Turkish and Macedonian minorities, as well as of migrants. There continued to be government-imposed restrictions on freedom of expression and freedom of worship. The government of Prime Minister Costas Simitis took some positive steps, including legalizing the presence of more than 400,000 mostly-Albanian migrants and abolishing article 19 of the citizenship law."
"As in previous years, the government recognized only one minority, the “Muslim” minority living in Thrace and protected under the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. The government continued to deny the existence of a Turkish minority, although most “Muslims” identify themselves as Turks, regardless of their ethnic origin. In August, the speaker of the parliament stated that the “Muslim and Christian population” of Thrace should be "homogenized.” Ethnic minorities that are not officially recognized often suffered restrictions on their freedom of expression and association. Among these ethnic minorities legally denied recognition are Macedonians."

What does this have to do with the Cyprus Problem?

Why not post similar from some of our other EU allies, like France or Germany?

I guess you are happy with Turkey on our soil ... because that's where it well stay, whilst it gathers 'evidence' that we are threatened by EU members ....

Since Cyprus is an extension of Greece then we wouldn't be wrong if we accused Cyprus of the same crime?

We emigrated to the UK to escape the awful discrimination we suffered, so yes I know only too well how the RoC treat its minorities. Hopefully those days are behind us now.
