Here's the Cyprus Mail article from last October relating to the incident. I can't find any references to what may have happened to them.

Dutch seek information about tourist arrests

By Nathan Morley

DUTCH diplomats are urgently looking into reports that two of their citizens have been arrested by Turkish Cypriot police in Famagusta.

The two men, who are understood to be on a package holiday, were arrested yesterday for allegedly taking photographs near several abandoned hotels in the Varosha district of Famagusta.

Despite being sealed off by wire fencing, the area is popular with tourists who often take photographs of the decaying buildings from a nearby beach.

Varosha, which has been a ghost town since 1974, is occupied by Turkish troops and used as a military base.

A spokesman for the Dutch Embassy in Nicosia told the Cyprus Mail that they were aware of the arrests and were “not prepared to discuss or make comment on the case at this point.”

However, a spokesman for the Dutch Foreign Ministry speaking from Amsterdam, confirmed that the men had been detained and that the Netherlands government was seeking information from the Turkish Cypriots.

“We actually know very little about this incident at the moment, we are trying to look further into the situation and discover what is actually happening on the ground,” he said.

Media in northern Cyprus reported last night a police investigation has been launched, while the cameras of the two men, aged 26 and 34, have been confiscated.

Several Turkish Cypriot radio channels claimed that the men have denied taking photographs inside a restricted military zone – a serious offence in the heavily fortified north.

An assessment of the men’s photographs is being conducted by experts.

Why have we not heard of the matter since then? Is there a chance that they were released and not reported by the media who first informed us. I remembr this incident when first published. Perhaps using your influence you could contact the Dutch embassy to find out.

Deniz ... the Dutch Diplomats don't know themselves!

I've raised the question of what has happened to them several times on the forum when this matter has cropped up, but no one is any the wiser. I've searched the News, as well, with keywords ... but nothing!

It's a mystery ....

Best stay away from the Turkish occupied north! :(

Have the Dutch made a statement since then? That was myquestion. I know you wish to spread fear, but, we still like to get to the bottom of the matter.

Perhaps we should consult Halil!!!

I've asked halil and Viewpoint, maybe even iceman ... plus others ... over the last few months ... all are silent.

No one knows!

No doubt they were released...

But their film was probably confiscated....if they had actually gone inside the fenced area be sure it would have been far worse for them and they would have been taken to a military court and heavily fined, after being intensively interrogated!

It would be a scary experience. I went through that a few years back in a village near Kormacit. I was taking photos of the forest when nearly arrested by a Turkish soldier. The Moukhtar of the village, whose guest I was tried to explain to the very young soldier who was almostapologetic and said that 'orders are order'. I said I was Turkish Cypriot, but still took a while t let me go. He said there was an army camp in the direction of the forest. I saw nothing. I didnt see any signs either; till he showed me a rusty tin sign with faded writing on it. As I said I was eventually released, but the sentry was scared stiff of his superiors. He was very nervous in case others of his patrol has seen what had happened. I am sure the Duthmen were released - eventually.

Fortunately you lived to tell the tale, unlike the poor man who was collecting snails several years ago who was ordered to be shot after being arrested.
