so what are your feelings of the ottoman empire? Any connection with the turks?

Good analogy. Turkey's occupation and expansionist desires on Cyprus is a throwback to the Ottoman Empire. Similarly, the Junta's expansionist desires on Cyprus, culminating in the coup against Makarios in 1974 was a throwback to the Byzantine era.

You seriously believe the junta had an expansionist plan in Cyprus that was inspired by the Byzantine Empire?

I do. Also the Church, which flies the yellow flag of the Byzantine Empire from its buildings.

DT, your question was as relevant to the "Byzantine Empire" actually being the Eastern Roman Empire, as the question…

“Why are the Taliban popular in Afghanistan and Pakistan?”

See DT.!

I told you he was going to do this!

I told you !

I never fall into opponent’s 2-cent tricks… I’ve been debating too long to be that foolish.

If DT has something interesting and relevant to say then he should just come right out with it and I will deal with it then. He is bound to fall to pieces…

My nephew is 9 and he knows that the junta had agreed to partition Cyprus with Turkey. I doubt many on the island believe otherwise. You're trying to tell me that splitting an 82% Greek populated island into 2 and sharing it with Turkey is expansionist?

Then start explaining the monuments left behind.

And by the way...the only advantage you have over me is that you don't have 2 toddlers that will get you up in 5 hours. Otherwise I'd sit here and make you take it until that viagra you just took became useless, 8)

God you islanders can be so patronising. Can I have some links please? It's not that I don't believe you but I'd like to verify your claim. I doubt they'd have articulated this sentiment officially.

I'm not trying to tell you. I am telling you.
Given that Cyprus was an independent country having Greece rule it – even if only a percentage of it – would mean an expansion.

“The coup of the Greek junta is an invasion, and from its consequences the whole people of Cyprus suffers, both Greeks and Turks.”—Makarios, July 19, 1974, UN Security Council

then show me one piece of evidence that the Agia Sophia was a Roman church. 2 of the emperors of the Byzantine Empire where involved there must be reference of a Roman church somewhere and not the Megali Ekklissia as it was then known.

What's a "Roman Church" DT, did you mean a Catholic church by any chance?

What makes you think all Romans were "Catholics" ? Justinian, was the Eastern Roman ruler who ordered Ayia Sophia it to be built and he was no Greek I assure you!

Be careful not to fall into the common Greek mythology trap of assuming that the Eastern Orthodox Church is “Greek”!

GR! ... you used the term "Catholic" first ... You don't have a clue!

It was one Christian Church looking to the West (Roman) and to the East (Greek) and then they split into the Orthodox and Roman Churches ....

And then the Roman Church spilt into the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Protestant Church ...

But the Greek Orthodox remained true ..... (even when adopted by the Russians etc... the Rituals were not changed!)

It’s obvious that those people who were educated in GC or Greek schools in Greece are so badly misinformed that they come here with a set of “given facts” such as…

1. Anything that includes the word “Byzantine” is Greek!
2. Christianity is Greek!
3. The Eastern Orthodox Church is Greek!
4. Churches are Greek!
5. God is Greek!

…and many more fallacious assumptions fed to them by their JUNK history education geared to elevate Greece and nothing else!

They are so fucked in the head that they put Nazi Germany to shame!
