If Cyprus Re-United...

Postby Leon » Mon Jun 20, 2005 6:22 pm

... would both languages [Greek and Turkish] survive? Would we all end up speaking the same language? What was the situation before the war? Were the Turkish-speakers generally able to speak Greek or vice-versa, or did they converse in English?

Leon.

if both communities have been living together for more than 500 years, and both speak their respective languages i'm sure the same will follow soon after were dead, with maybe English being the prefered language to communicate between the two.

Mr brother

I need your help with my questions please

I have often heard that pre 74 if you wanted a good job in Cyprus then you needed to be able to speak Greek and/ or English. Is this true?

I have also heard that very few GC's spoke Turkish. is this true?

When I was younger there was a TC living in Archway who could only speak Greek. He was from Erenkoy.
Were there any other villages where this also happened?

Thanks

pre 1974 most TCs spoke greek out of necesisity but very few GCs spoke turkish they said it was to hard and refused to learn. Was it an intentional and calculated way of gradually working towards a cypriot nation only speaking greek, I leave to your evaluation and decision:?: :?: :?:

YES...the Greek Cypriots opressed Turkish Cypriots and there was a conspiracy to make all the Turkish Cypriots forget how to speak Turkish.

are you happy now?

Yes this is true but in most cases even that was not enough.

Yes, even though majority of tc spoke greek

Yes, mainly around Limassol if memory does not serve wrong and mixed villages where tc were only a few.

Viewpoint, would you like to meet up for a coffee somewhere in Nicosia...so I could beat the sh!t out of you for being a manipulative and lieing little prick...?

As for GC not knowing musch Turkish...well, work out the precentage of GC to TC and then use some common sense for once.

Mr Viewpoint

Good Everning

I'm not at all sure that this was any planned thing, just how things worked out. The best jobs needed Greek or English presumably?

A number of my neighbours speak Greek, well sort of but they are quite pleased by this fact.

I think that they believe that if there is any soettlement then this will be a Greek speaking Island in the future. Presumably they think some kind of settlement is going to happen.

Any help with my other questions?
