If Cyprus Re-United...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

as for the younger generations not knowing Greek...well even if there parents are fluent, when did they hear it? What would the agents of Denktash or Turkey do if they heard them speaking in Greek conversations between one another?

Oh God, this discussion is getting more interesting. Knowing Greek does not mean that it was used by Turkish Cypriots to communicate with each other!!! That's why the children didn't learn it, because the parents didn't use it (well sometimes some T.C parents prefered talking in Greek, when they wanted to hide something from the children, my aunt and my uncle are just an example  )

WE ARE NOT LIVING IN A TOTALITARIAN REGIME MAIN. We can speak any language, this includes Greek. There are no agents.

You miss undestood part of what I said. I meant why should TC youth know Greek if there parents werent using it after 74.

As for talking in Greek...don't tell me that speaking in Greek wasnt at least frowned upon by the authorities..especially soon after the invasion.

Othellos, this is BS. Nobody considers knowing Greek as an insult. On contrary, they see it as an advantage. I wish I could speak Greek!

Fair enough, Garbitsch & Metecyp. I take your words for it.

Yes it was frowned upon right after the invasion when the wounds were so fresh..but we're talking about today not 31 years ago and nowadays, it's considered advantageous to be able to speak Greek in the north.

I believe at points during the Ottoman period the number of Turks approached parity, but I don't think the GCs were ever a minority. The only figures I could find close to the Ottoman period were for Nicosia alone, in a British census carried out shortly after they took over.

In Nicosia on 31st January 1879, the population was as follows:

English: 28
Greek Church: 5,251
Catholics: 121
Mohammedans: 5,628
Armenians: 166
Jews: 3
Total: 11,197

So, in Nicosia at least, the Turks did form a majority population in 1879, but I can't say the same for the island as a whole.

When have the Turks been a majority in this country? Not even after they butchered most of us they were not a majority.
