Those that came from the Ionian

stan means land.
Yunanistan means the land that the Ionians live in.

Those that come from yunanistan are refered to as yunanli or rum or gavur depending on you political stand point.

but deniz said that a rum can never be a yunan...

Only for the educated, for the peasant stock its all the same.

and in which category would you put the tcs in this?...

The following discussion is interesting. This is basically the root of the word meaning Greece used in a large number of Middle Eastern and Asian languages, and this usage is not unique to Turkish.

You know as well as anyone on this forum, that "Greek" is not a name given to Hellenes by Ottomans. Your apparently "innocent" question was not innocent at all, was it? You were just stirring it, so don't come the indignant aggrieved party with me, you racist pig. F*** off

I really think you should try and go out a bit more, VP. It might help you to move on to the next page of your propaganda manual.

I do not avoid anything of the sort. Tim Drayton's earlier post gives you a full explanation, so go and read it if you really wish to know. After you 've read Tim's post, if you have any further questions I will enlighten you.

I do not know if anybody is still interested, but it appears that the word 'Yunan' was used throughout the Islamic world to refer to ancient Greece. When the modern Greek state was founded, people in Islamic countries named this new state based on their word for ancient Greece ('-istan' is a Faris suffix meaning 'country of').

When you consider that Western Europeans also gave the new state a name based on their word for ancient Greece, such as Greece, Grece, Griechenland, this seems all the less remarkable.
