The British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has said that the issue of guarantorship in Cyprus needs to be taken up once a solution is found to the Cyprus problem.
In an interview he gave to the Athens-based To Vima newspaper, Miliband touched upon the Cyprus issue and said Britain is working hard so that a positive result emerges at the end of Cyprus negotiations process.
‘There are two main points in the solution of the Cyprus problem. One is a solution to be provided by Cypriots, for Cypriots. The second is the issue of guarantorship which should await the solution of the Cyprus problem’ Miliband went on saying.
‘We believe that the duo Mehmet Ali Talat and Dimitris Christofias are the best combination for a generation to solve the problem in Cyprus’, he added.
Referring to Turkey’s goal of full EU membership, the British Foreign Secretary said the improvement of relations between Brussels and Ankara will be beneficial for Athens too.
He noted that Greece’s decision to support Turkey’s EU membership is a farseeing stance which carries great strategical importance.
I've got a better idea. Turkey, Greece and Britain (with support from the international community) propose a new guarantor situation first, given that all three are discredited, having let Cyprus down badly in different ways, in the past. The guarantee proposal on the table will have to be one that the Cypriot people, taken as a whole, is able to accept.
Then, once that is sorted, this will give the leaders on Cyprus the impetus and freedom they need to secure the desired solution in all other areas, by Cypriots, for Cypriots.
I vote for the State of Nevada to act as Guarantor.
Viva Las Vegas .... and Elvis Presley as the next muhtar of the tnct.
