Noting that many problems being faced by villagers would be solved automatically through a solution, the President drew attention to the fact that Turkey was also in favor of a solution being found in Cyprus.

Explaining that during the negoations process the two sides had reached some agreement on many issues, ‘the only issue that will be difficult to solve is the issue of land’, said the President.

‘Considering the Turkish side had agreed on 29% plus as a starting point on the land issue, we will have to give up on some of our land’, he added.
‘There is no need to worry though, none of the investments that have been made in the Republic will go to waste’, said the President.

What is Talat talking about? Give up 'our' land? I thought it was established in the European Courts that land in the northern part of the island currently controlled by Turkey's military belongs to the original owners, who fled their homes in fear of their lives in 1974. It is they that will decide whether or not to give up some of their land, for appropriate compensation, at current market values.

Why does Talat treat his villagers like children? Why doesn't he come clean? They are on a steep learning curve and need to appreciate the situation very quickly if there is going to be an agreement by end 2009.
