Miltiades,
Very often the difference between The Government and The People gets lost in translation. As an Englishman I look back at our ‘glorious’ empirical history and am ashamed to think that my Country committed the atrocities it did over the Centuries.
The people in the UK are against so many things that the so called government has carried out in their name, not just the current fiasco’s but many things over the last few decades. I think Britain could be heading for a very British revolution.....they have come to the end of their tether.
In the Cyprus conflict in the 50’s I was a mere teenager and as far I was aware at that time, the only reason that the British were in Cyprus was to stop the GC’s and TC’s from killing one another and the enemy was an outfit called EOKA......they were the bad guys because they kept killing our guys. I never saw it as a war of liberation from the Imperialist British, I got the impression that as we fought on the same side in the War, we were buddies and we, the British were only trying to help out by protecting the majority from the minority.
But, I formed my opinion from what news I read at the time and from the impression given by the Government of the day. This process goes on today, we only know what ‘they’ tell us. But, at least in democratic countries, we are now a far better informed society and have the opportunity to form our own opinions. The masses are far more vocal than they have ever been.

It is a great shame that Britain still treats Cyprus in an unfavourable way as a result of its Foreign policies which lean towards support for the much larger and more powerful ally , Turkey.
I think if you spoke to most people in the UK you would find that there would be much more support for Greece and/or Cyprus than there would be for the Turkish Regime. Not wishing to be a racist but Britain is a Christian Country and we have a built in resistance to alien religions. Turkey is known to be a majority Muslim country, has a poor record on human rights and is seen as a brutal regime. So, the British people are not pro Turkey. What the Government attitude is would be different because they see any alliance in purely strategic terms. Just like the expenses it’s a case of......what’s in it for me???
So, I find your attitude to the British people refreshing. You will have to put up with us always moaning but, it is part of our inherited make up, we do try to make things better........often it is taken as unwarranted interference.
As for the memorial, in a united Cyprus does it matter where it goes. The Cemetery in which these people are buried would seem the obvious choice?
GET REAL – why does almost everything you say, have to be so bloody offensive?
