Hate and bigotry is always introduced by the invader! Ask your country who is the world’s worst offender of invasions and occupations throughout the world, even to this day!

memorial

Miltiades,

Very often the difference between The Government and The People gets lost in translation. As an Englishman I look back at our ‘glorious’ empirical history and am ashamed to think that my Country committed the atrocities it did over the Centuries.

The people in the UK are against so many things that the so called government has carried out in their name, not just the current fiasco’s but many things over the last few decades. I think Britain could be heading for a very British revolution.....they have come to the end of their tether.

In the Cyprus conflict in the 50’s I was a mere teenager and as far I was aware at that time, the only reason that the British were in Cyprus was to stop the GC’s and TC’s from killing one another and the enemy was an outfit called EOKA......they were the bad guys because they kept killing our guys. I never saw it as a war of liberation from the Imperialist British, I got the impression that as we fought on the same side in the War, we were buddies and we, the British were only trying to help out by protecting the majority from the minority.

But, I formed my opinion from what news I read at the time and from the impression given by the Government of the day. This process goes on today, we only know what ‘they’ tell us. But, at least in democratic countries, we are now a far better informed society and have the opportunity to form our own opinions. The masses are far more vocal than they have ever been.

You said:

It is a great shame that Britain still treats Cyprus in an unfavourable way as a result of its Foreign policies which lean towards support for the much larger and more powerful ally , Turkey.

I think if you spoke to most people in the UK you would find that there would be much more support for Greece and/or Cyprus than there would be for the Turkish Regime. Not wishing to be a racist but Britain is a Christian Country and we have a built in resistance to alien religions. Turkey is known to be a majority Muslim country, has a poor record on human rights and is seen as a brutal regime. So, the British people are not pro Turkey. What the Government attitude is would be different because they see any alliance in purely strategic terms. Just like the expenses it’s a case of......what’s in it for me???

So, I find your attitude to the British people refreshing. You will have to put up with us always moaning but, it is part of our inherited make up, we do try to make things better........often it is taken as unwarranted interference.

As for the memorial, in a united Cyprus does it matter where it goes. The Cemetery in which these people are buried would seem the obvious choice?

With some 300 thousand Cypriots in the UK , almost each and every single Cypriot in Cyprus has a relation living in the UK . The Cypriots of the UK have integrated whilst still retaining their culture , family values , self respect and integrity which values are also shared by much of the UK .
As a Cypriot who grew up in the UK and with many English relatives I feel I have come to know pretty well the English (use English to differentiate between the many British in UK with whom I do not have much in common )
and with the extra advantage of being able to evaluate certain aspects of UK culture by comparing it to that of the Cypriot one which as similar as it is does have its own character .

Britains foreign policy of the 20th century was based on British interests , as indeed it should , super powers past and present in fact , formulated their foreign policies forged alliances based entirely on their own interests , something we Cypriots still have not learned.

long live the ...charlies !!

There already exists a cemetery and Memorial at Wayne's Keep (Nicosia), so why do we need another one?

... And they are not waiting for a united Cyprus or legitimate planning/permission/approval from the RoC ... They appear to have negotiated with the occupying Turks and Army .... and it's due to be unveiled this November (mish).

What do you make of that
