Part quote from Miltiades.............................
So there , I'm 63 , and must be allowed to freely express my views, and so are you.
Finally I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the British members of this forum for accepting criticism of the British MPs expense fiasco without getting all patriotic , like some of the Cypriots on this forum when ever a bad aspect of Cyprus living is criticized.
Well done the Brits !!
=============
I really can’t be bothered to study the ins and outs of the fighting between Miltiades and Oracle, so maybe this is a bit out of context, but..........
As a Brit. with views on the way things are in both Cyprus and the UK I enjoy a good well based discussion on any topic. I have not lived in the UK for over 20 years but, just like a Cypriot living abroad I still have views about what happens in my country of birth. I have lived in Cyprus, part time whilst I worked in the Middle East from1994 through to 1999, and permanently since then. So, I also have views on the way things are in Cyprus as well. So, as I outrank you on age (I am sixty eight) I must be allowed to freely express my views, as much as you seem to want people to accept yours.
I find that many of the threads on Cyprus Forum are virtually hijacked by a few members that seem to feel that the only form of argument is to go for the throat and throw out comments often totally unrelated to the discussion and usually insulting or offensive. And, Miltiades you are no exception!!!
The first discussion I commented on was on the driving ability (or lack of?) of Cypriots...........for some reason best known to yourself you made the sweeping statement that I was ‘another bloody Arab plonker’! Was that necessary, was it an intelligent contribution to the argument or was it that you couldn’t think of anything sensible to contribute at the time? To answer my own question, No, it was simply an unnecessary side swipe to insult another member. I have read a lot of the contentious threads and it is the same pattern by the same few people every time, attack, insult and offend. If this is the way Cypriots talk to one another when discussing the future of this Island, no wonder that after 35 years you are still insulting one another and a solution seems as far away as ever.
The British bombed seven shades of s**t out of the Germans, killed thousands of them and they did the same to us. The conflict went on for 5 years and yet some 10 years after the conflict ended, we were ‘friends’. Whilst the Cyprus conflict in ’74 was a totally unnecessary tragedy, do you not think it might be time to bury the hatchet and try a talk to one another like human beings.
So, by all means let’s have a good well founded intelligent discussion with argument and counter argument, but lets drop all the deliberate insults. If you have some thing sensible to say, say it. I may disagree, if I do I will politely tell you I do and why I disagree. It would be enjoyable debate if you, and others, could do likewise.
So let’s try debate and discussion, but with respect for the views of others. By all means disagree, that is what makes an enjoyable debate, but do it politely.
Miltiades, you said ‘This forum is a success because Admin acknowledges , I hope it does , that dead debates are of no interest to anyone.’ I agree with you 100% so, let’s have a debate................how about some solutions to the political system in the UK?
