The Nile Delta is already producing oil from this same geological formation.

I read that the oil reserves in CY's Economic Zone are estimated at 6-8 Billion barrels.

Re G-rex, you will as much oil as Greece. Zilch.

Viliam my Turkish friend, think about it. There is oil in the Aegean Sea, and yet Greece can't get it out. Why?

Here i can reply on Militi's way: just because Greece has malakes politicians.

Well if Turkey attempts to block the Americans exploring our OWN oil reserves , the great Greek Navy would immediate mobilize and come to the aid of the Americans !!!!

Turkeys threats to block exploration must be challenged through international and predominantly European avenues. The entire world considers Turkey as the occupier of a part of Cyprus , her nauseating claim to rights over the Cypriot waterways is indicative of her utter disrespect of international laws , there she is occupying a large part of Cyprus and has the audacity to declare that oil exploration must have her consent.
Bollocks to that I say .

You are not familiar with Miltiades' other overriding interest in Cyprus which is to protect the commercial wealth of his property portfolio. It's the Dollars talking for him, now ...

Cyprus official: US firm Noble Energy to start offshore search for oil and gas by year end

MENELAOS HADJICOSTIS, Associated Press Writer
8:58 AM PDT, May 29, 2009

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus has authorized U.S. firm Noble Energy to start searching for oil and gas deposits off the island's southern coast by the end of the year, a top energy official said Friday, in a move that could stoke tensions with regional rival Turkey.

Energy Service chief Solon Kassinis said the government granted a license to the Houston, Texas-based company last year to explore one of 11 blocks inside the island's exclusive economic zone. He did not explain the delay in the announcement.

The block is close to a large undersea gas deposit that Noble located off Israel, which according to the company's Web site is estimated at 5 trillion cubic feet.

Kassinis said the discovery raises optimism about gas potential inside Cyprus' zone that covers 51,000 square kilometers (17,000 sq. miles) of seabed.

Cyprus launched an initial licensing round in 2007. Kassinis said a second licensing round will be launched, but no specific date has been set.

Cyprus' oil and gas exploration bid has raised tensions with neighboring Turkey which says it also has legal rights and interests in the area.

The Mediterranean island has been divided between an internationally recognized Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish Cypriot north since 1974, when Turkey invaded in response to short-lived coup by supporters of union with Greece.

"Turkey has some fundamental rights and interests acknowledged by the United Nations in (those) marine areas. Turkey will naturally protect its rights," Turkey's semiofficial Anatolia News Agency quoted Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Burak Ozugergin as saying on Friday.

Cyprus government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said the island adheres to international law and would defend its rights "calmly, but with much determination and vigor."

"It's others who are violating the law," he said.

Cypriot officials last year accused Turkish navy ships of interfering with an offshore oil-and-gas survey off Cyprus' south coast.

The Turkish government also insists that breakaway Turkish Cypriots should have a say in the island's oil-and-gas rights.

Only Turkey recognizes a Turkish Cypriot state in the north and maintains 35,000 troops there.

Turkish Cypriot foreign minister Huseyin Ozgurgun said oil and gas exploration could harm ongoing reunification talks.

New Turkish threats over oil exploration
By Anna Hassapi

ANKARA has said it will not allow an American company slated to undertake exploration in Cyprus waters for oil and natural gas reserves to carry out its work, saying the Turkish Navy would intervene to protect its interests.

“Our fleet is there. Even if it is an American company we will not allow them to conduct research,” a Turkish official was quoted as saying in the Turkish newspaper Hurryiet, which did not disclose the official’s name.

Burak Ozugergin, spokesman of the Turkish Foreign Ministry said: “Such moves are inconsistent with the ongoing substantial negotiations between the two sides on the island. Such moves create the dynamics for tension and are devoid of legal standing; in addition they infringe equal rights and the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people that are related to the natural wealth of the island. Turkey has basic rights and interests in the marine areas that are on the west of the equator. It is natural that our country will protect these rights.”

He added: “The agreement was widely covered in the Turkish Cypriot press, making the front page in most publications. In one editorial at Halkin Sesi, Turkish Cypriot journalist Ismet Kotak, called the administration in the north to immediately move to oil exploration in the northern coast of Cyprus and sign an agreement with the a Turkish oil company.

The barrage of threats came after US ambassador Frank Urbancic said earlier in the week that an American company would being exploration soon.

“The announcement of the American ambassador has the potential to blow up the foundations of the negotiations, just like the Orams trial,” Turkish Cypriot ‘Foreign Minister’ Hussein Osgiourgun said.

The Turkish threats caused more anger in Nicosia and were condemned by the government spokesman and party leaders, who called the EU and the international community to take note.

“The exploration and use of whatever wealth the Republic of Cyprus possesses is its sovereign right and the state will act accordingly. If such threats our voiced then it is a matter that the international community should look at because there are international laws, agreements, and an order which everyone with no exceptions should adhere to,” government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said yesterday.

“It’s our hope that we can solve the Cyprus problem, reunite our country and then we can all benefit from the possible finding of any reserves. We should not behave as if we already have oil and natural gas as we are still at the research stage,” Stefanou added.

“Such statements are unacceptable and arrogant on the part of a country that through the coordination of its powers will show us whether it can conform with international standards and with it European obligations. The message should be given that there is no prospect for progress in Turkey’s EU accession negotiations if it is behaving like a conquering power and if it continues to disregard the rights of a European state. It is the time to talk the language of truth to our European partners,” commented Nikos Anasstasiades, DISY president.

The Greens called the state to activate its common defense pact with Greece and ask the Greek navy as well as the navies of other EU member states to offer protection to the vessels of the American company which will conduct research in the marine area of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone.

“Turkey should finally respect international law, follow the road of peace and abandon the policy of threats,” said Ioanna Panagiotou, Green Party General Secretary.
