My beautiful dog!

Postby Bessima » Sat Jun 18, 2005 12:20 am

Hi

We have been busy finding out everything about moving and living in Cyprus before we go property hunting there next week.
Oops - what about our dog? She is a big Gordon Setter with a lot of coat! How will she cope with the heat? Anybody out there with a dog who could give some advice?

You'll have to make sure that her coat is kept well clipped and stripped during the summer. I know someone who (bizarrely) has a husky in Cyprus. Essentially during the summer the dog is unable to cope with the heat and has to remain in an air-conditioned environment. I'm not familiar with Gordon Setters, I'd advise you to talk to your vet about how they would cope with extreme heat.

Sandy, double-coated dogs are NOT supposed to be in any environment with temperatures above 30C... (and that's the max top limit)

Here in Cyprus we get to have close to 30C during tha night sometimes, so you can imagine that the poor dog will not be at its best.

However, the heat WON'T kill it and there are many things you can do to make his life better. I have a black Labrador Retriever (also double-coated) and we have arranged our program in that way that will provide a better life for both. The walks take place at around 07:00 and after 19:00 where there is no "overheated" sun and our mid-day walks are always "accompanied" by a water-spray bottle.

Apart from that, and owning a Lab, we spend most of our time in the sea...!!!

For more info, here's my vet's number +357 99 620 160, his name is Tommi and he's an excellent doctor and person.

Have a look at his gallery:

Any idea how Westies cope Panos? We've had 32 degrees over here the last couple of days and mine's been very sleepy and lethargic...

Hi

Thanks to all you canine fans for the advice. Is a Gordon Setter a double coated breed? I would love to post a pic but I don't know how - any instructions somewhere?

Well we are off to Cyprus tomorrow to meet those enthusiastic estate agents  but will definitely enjoy our time there whatever.

Our dog Bess has declined the close shave but would rather go for dreadlocks!
