Response from Press Complaints Commission RE: Telegraph

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Response from Press Complaints Commission RE: Telegraph

Postby yiannisP » Thu May 28, 2009 12:41 pm

Do you remember this article from the Telegraph regarding EOKA being terrorists for fighting for independence from British Colonial rule?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/pers ... -land.html

There was also a thread started here:

Well, the Press Complainst Commission have given a decision regarding my complaint. Don't get your hopes up though as they basically say it is a matter of perspective and it isn't misleading anyone. I have scanned in the letter below

yianni

Very well done for pursuing this and for firing a warning shot against the bows of the Telegraph.

As I think I explained to you before, the PCC is not independent of the press but a self-regulatory body that, in reality, exists to protect newspapers from expensive libel actions.

I think their response over the use of the term "Terrorist" is wishy-washy but entirely par for the course! And their Code is written to enable newspapers to wriggle out of things like this.

Well done Yianni for bringing the error to their attention ... even if their partisanship fails to acknowledge it as such.

I was waiting for a response from my Lib Dem member of Parliament on this, but it has now turned into a further complaint which I am raising with the Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg ... so I have nothing to report as yet. But, this matter is far from closed.

Not a bad decision really. It recognises "terrorist" as "clearly a loaded term - the use and interpretation of which was often based on a particular perspective - and as such open to dispute" as well as the fact that the use of the term is "controversial", "partisan" and "comment [or] conjecture" rather than fact. I think this was well worth Yiannis' trouble filing the complaint.

Now good luck trying to explain Zan what the Press Complaints Commission actually said.

Absolutely polis ....

"A loaded term" hurled in this day and age, towards a major newspaper, is pretty damning ...

Shame scumbag Turks like Zan cannot appreciate how EOKA fought for Cyprus, and still side with the Colonialists ... which I understand will shortly be the undoing of Turkey 8) .... Kismet!
