Lazy postman fails to deliver
By Jacqueline Theodoulou
A YOUNG postman from Nicosia has landed himself in some hot water after failing to deliver countless letters, because he couldn’t be bothered.
The Postal Services have launched an investigation into the case, after it emerged that the postman in question – a contract worker – was dumping the letters at his home instead of delivering them.
The Services have also sent a letter to the police, seeking advice on whether there is a case for a criminal investigation.
A police spokesman yesterday told the Cyprus Mail, “The police will investigate to see what happened, but if a criminal offence isn’t proved, it will be up to the postal authorities to investigate a disciplinary crime”.
According to the case, which was yesterday brought to light by Politis newspaper, the young postman was caught out last Friday, when he called work to say he wanted the day off as he had hurt his leg and therefore couldn’t use his moped to deliver letters. (Yeah, right!)
What he wasn’t aware of was that the Postal Services are ordered to investigate absences from work. So an officer visited the man’s home to investigate.
On arrival, the officer found the parked moped next to the postman’s house with a bunch of undelivered letters, which were a few days old, lying nearby.
The police were notified and the young man’s house was searched, were stacks of undelivered letters were found.
The postman resigned, but according to the head of the Services, Andreas Gregoriou, this doesn’t mean the case has been closed.
“The case will be investigated as if his resignation had not been handed in,” Gregoriou explained.
And the fact that the man in question was a contract worker will not alter the investigation in any way.
“We will move ahead with our disciplinary investigation and the police will carry out its own procedures,” he added.
