Children illegally riding mopeds killed in double tragedy

Postby cyprusgeoff » Wed May 27, 2009 8:11 am

I did warn that a tragedy would happen as a result of these youths riding bikes without license, tax, insurance etc and now it has happened.

http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=45867

Why don't the Police now do something to stop this under age riding of these bikes.

They know who they are, the parents know that the boys are doing it but still nothing is done to stop it.

Any Summer evening you can expect to see up to eight different boys on a variety of two wheeled vehicles careering through Kissonerga ignoring
the speed limit and putting other road users at risk.

The other day I saw four of these idiots on one scooter now who had proper control of it?

If any of these boys lost control and hit another vehicle, as they have no insurance they could put families at risk and terrible hardship due to their stupidity.

I still blame the parents as I know where two of these boys live and as they keep the bikes at home, how can the parents not know what is happening when every afternoon and evening their Sons are to be seen riding these motorbikes/mopeds/scooters.

Come on Cyprus Police, start stopping these boys and take the bikes off of them before more needless deaths occur.

Young kids racing up and down on these mopeds, doing wheelies on the main road, playing chicken with oncoming traffic, yet the police still won't do anything about it. Will take a few more of these deaths before authorities and parents take notice.

Its very sad to hear and it made me think of peoples views on the english police force...people tend to say they are this and that but can you really imagine a uk police officer ignoring a child on a scooter, no tax etc etc??? no it would get delt with and the parent would get given a warning too.
I see it all of the time and to be honest I think the paphos police are lazy when it comes down to this sort of thing.
only when the police from nicossia head into paphos town do people get pulled up for no helmets etc. the police are too layed back for my liking and it boils down to laziness and selfishness also, if they were doing their jobs this would not happen. its very sad to say the least.
come on cyprus police do your bloody jobs and keep people safe on the island.

At the very end of that Cyprus Mail report it says: -

Paphos traffic police is investigating.

If they were doing their jobs professionally and diligently right from the start this tragedy could possibly been avoided.

This seems to be a problem in a lot of the villages and has been for many years, WHY?

Proper policing and a zero tolerance attitude by the Police, confiscating of the vehicles being used without tax and insurance etc might get the message across to these youths that society won't put up with this illegal behaviour which puts innocent legal drivers at risk.

Child deaths

The Cypriot police are about as much use as an ash tray on a Harley Davidson, especially when it comes to upholding traffic laws. I am not sure what the qualifications are for entry into the police force but, judging by those you see around the standards have got to be pretty low. I saw a police car the other day with an officer hiding behind his open blue and white police car door with his radar gun...........AND WITH THE BLUE LIGHTS FLASHING!!! Just how smart is that?

I would suggest a very simple solution that would show results within days. Cut police pay to subsistence level and then pay them bonuses on performance!!!! A payment on a scale of charges awarded to each station, for each offence ticketed and then divided equally among all the officers at that station at the end of the month. It would give them an incentive to do a days work, no need for overtime as the officers would be happy to work for nothing and anybody caught trying to boost the system with false accusations, gets fired on the spot.

The police would be all over these children on motorbikes...... like a rash, no crash helmets, under age, no license, no road tax, no insurance etc. add to that all the other thousands of offences committed every day and the police could become the New Rich of Cyprus!!!!!!

How stupid is the thinking behind this: -

From the Mail http://www.cyprus-mail.com/news/main.php?id=45882

Measures for accident black spot

COMMUNICATION and Works Minister Nicos Nicolaides said yesterday measures to improve safety on the Kissonerga – Peyia road would be implemented as soon as possible.

The minister was speaking following an extraordinary Road Safety Unit meeting late yesterday afternoon to address Saturday night’s tragic road accident on the busy Paphos district road.

The accident occurred on a stretch of road with no street lighting and resulted in the deaths of Apostolos Constantinou, 14, and Nicholas Nicolaou, 13, from Chloraka, who were driving a stolen moped without headlights.

Nicolaides said plans to improve road safety along the road marked as a black spot on the road network were in the pipeline but that due to its high level of danger they would be completed as soon as possible.

Headquarters Traffic Police Chief Demetris Demetriou said in the meantime policing of the dangerous road would increase as a measure to reduce danger and to limit the number of accidents along the particular road.

No mention about the need to police and bring a halt to these boys riding about on mopeds etc under age without either license, insurance or any other legal document.

No mention about why a 13 and 14 year old were out at 23.15 on a Saturday night riding around on what was reported as a stolen vehicle.

Yeah, improve the road and that's going to stop these boys riding around illegally, I don't think so.

If the chief of Pafos police hasn't got the will, the interest or the guts and intelligence to tackle the problem by taking these boys off the road then he should resign and hand over the job to someone who has.

I thought traffic laws in Cyprus were seen more as 'guidlines'. :)

I say leave it as it is. Of course it's a tragedy but if you want to be policed beyond recognition go & live in the UK. I for one, enjoy the laid back attitude of the constabulary, albeit I am actually law abiding anyway. Why does everybody feel the need to bring the island into the 21st Century ?

Just go with the flow. Unfortunately accicents like this will always happen, the police and no end of road lighting won't stop them.

I am all for Cyprus retaining its traditional charm but to suggest that its charm would be lost if measures to reduce deaths, serious injuries and devastated families, were avoided, makes no sense.

I do not think that, for example, young teens riding, irresponsibily, on mopeds is part of Cyprus' tradition. Twenty years ago young men could not afford cars, teenagers had no access to mopeds and traffic levels were very low.

I do my very best to avoid danger on the road, I ask only that others do the same.
