A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

I love Tim and Paphitis and Jerry.

Reh Paphiti, get back here mate. These are interesting times in the National Struggle.

.. Or else I'll start spelling Paphos with an "f"

I strongly second that,

Most fools here do not understand the Greek language, the slogan does not say death to the TURKS which most members believe it to mean.

I suppose the Turkish invasion of Cyprus is not offensive but we still endure the occupation !!!

With my Moderator's hat on; clearly a number of people find the Signature offensive; the problem (possibly) lies with different interpration of the translation.

The matter is now with Admin, whom, in his immense wisdom (and Greek/English dictionary!) will rule on its acceptablity.

That won't be necessary.

I have removed the signature but will also remove myself from this forum.

I have had my say, made friends and enemies, learned all I need to learn about Cyprus and so there is no point in continuing any further.

I wish you all the best. Some of you can remain in contact via email or phone if you wish, but I can't continue on a forum where people can't express themselves however they like.

Please note that I do not endorse the phrase as it is not to my tastes.

:)

Now don't sulk like a little kid, I firmly believe that you enjoy your time on this forum so why spoil it? We may not see "eye to eye" on many issues but I respect your love and passion for our island. Don't go

It is hard to draw the line between protecting free speech and banning outright racist or fascist slogans, but I think this one clearly crossed the line.

If anybody is interested or concerned enough, this same slogan is to be found painted in a prominent place beside a main road in Mesa Geitonia, Limassol near the junction of Grigori Afxentiou and Spyrou Kyprianou.

Welcome back Tim . Have noted the location of this slogan and will attend to it on my next visit !!!

Regretfully I have to say that I will have to arm myself with paints and brushes on my next visit to the old country this Summer.

Of course it doesn't Plonker , it just says that A good Turk is a Dead Turk
Did you say you speak Greek ??
Maybe the message in this slogan is this " IT IS HIGH TIME THAT THE POISONOUS HATRED THAT HAS ENGULFED THESE TWO PEOPLES OVER CENTURIES COMES TO AN END "

May I also endorse the come back Paphitis sentiment by saying this.
Please come back as a constructive supporter of the RoC political agenda in the search of a peaceful and just solution to the Cyprob.
Retract comments such as bringing down a civilian aircraft encroaching on Cyprus's air space without authority from the legitimate government , increase your activities and direct them towards the legal and political battles fought in the EU , UN and elsewhere.
Challenge the reckless statements that contribute not one iota of benefit to the cause of the Cyprus struggle .
Finally ignore any comments by Madam Venomous Oracle the hate master !!

Silly boy, if you are/were offended by the invasion and occupation of Cyprus this would suffice as a signature:-

"I am offended by, and hate, the invasion and occupation of Cyprus by Turkey"

It's not difficult!

umit07 ... I don't know the origins of this maxim. We need someone like AlexISS who is well versed on matters political and historical.

But the translation you have opted for ... branded by reactionary fools (like Miltiades) is definitely wrong.

A closer translation, I would say, bearing in mind linguistics nuances, would be "Only in death can a Turk be good" ... which as axioms go, is a pretty standard aphorism to make an example of those who habitually err.

The problem with you and Bafidi is that nationalistic hate has blinded you both. The facts are that the axiom is widely used by ultra nationalistic greeks on their neo-nazi style websites.

Stop trying to play the devils advocate
