A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Postby bill cobbett » Mon May 25, 2009 1:27 pm

My beloved brothers and sisters...

Please calm down , it's a signature and to me like all good sigs, it provokes thought and debate, reasoned debate.... on the matter of self-expression.

Come on Bill, it's a bit more than that. One of our most articulate and interesting posters ( Tim) has said he wants nothing to do with a racist site. It looks like we may lose him because of this slogan.

umit07 ... I don't know the origins of this maxim. We need someone like AlexISS who is well versed on matters political and historical.

But the translation you have opted for ... branded by reactionary fools (like Miltiades) is definitely wrong.

A closer translation, I would say, bearing in mind linguistics nuances, would be "Only in death can a Turk be good" ... which as axioms go, is a pretty standard aphorism to make an example of those who habitually err.

So the quicker we all get them there the quicker they'll stop erring?

That is only one (extreme) method for achieving goodness. The alternative is to simply stop behaving badly, in life ....

I am anti-capital punishment, and I don't advocate punishments of any description lightly. But I personally don't mind any forms of verbal eye-openers ... based on truth!

But, admittedly these are easy vehicles for inarticulate fools ....

What on earth does capital punishment have to do with racist signatures woman , or are you again trying to impress all by your vocabulary abilities !! You don't advocate punishments of any description but you don't mind any forms of verbal eye openers ??? What a load of poppycock !

With my Moderator's hat on; clearly a number of people find the Signature offensive; the problem (possibly) lies with different interpration of the translation.

The matter is now with Admin, whom, in his immense wisdom (and Greek/English dictionary!) will rule on its acceptablity.

In anticipation of a wise decision I will remove my signature.

I too am worried we will lose articulate pro-Cypriot posters like james_mav who has not become familiar with Miltiades' bully tactics ...

Miltiades' comprehension is infantile at best. He is incapable of reflective reasoning. He seems to think he has a monopoly on who gets to post on this forum.

He has admitted himself on this forum that he has PM'd me to stop posting. He is a vile dictator who has the same habits as the Turks he feels affiliated to.

Tim Drayton has been here long enough to know what the forum is about. Indeed, was he not the one who started a thread regarding some graffiti, "Kill Turks" ?

... In which case he is merely supporting Miltiades in driving away free-speaking GCs who are new to the forum. Passive aggressive manipulative underhand tactics!

Thousands who share your view and opinions, you be lucky to find 4 others or as they say "quattro gatti"

That won't be necessary.

I have removed the signature but will also remove myself from this forum.

I have had my say, made friends and enemies, learned all I need to learn about Cyprus and so there is no point in continuing any further.

I wish you all the best. Some of you can remain in contact via email or phone if you wish, but I can't continue on a forum where people can't express themselves however they like.

Please note that I do not endorse the phrase as it is not to my tastes.

:)

My dear Jerry,

May I beg you and others to go back to the first page of this thread where our P posts twice and where he says something like....

1. He is using the sig as a protest in support of free expression and
2. He gives us an interpretation of what it means to him and what he is getting across to us... And here he says ... That Turks are not to be trusted.

I think he makes these two things clear and yet some have chosen, for the usual reasons, to ignore these two points.

(P. Sorry to post in your defense, I know you don't need a plonker like me to do this)
