CLINTON SAYS IT’S IN THE HANDS OF TWO PARTIES IN CYPRUS TO REACH A SETTLEMENT ON THEIR OWN
The key for a solution is in the hands of two parties in Cyprus, the United States says.
The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told a Greek Cypriot audience in Washington that the two peoples of Cyprus need to take the decision themselves.
But she also expressed her country’s determined support to the mediating role of the United Nations in the solution process.
‘I have met with representatives from both sides on the island and this proves the commitment owned by Obama’s government towards providing support to any initiative taken by the two Cyprus parties in order to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem on their own’ Clinton said.
Reiterating the US support for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal settlement in Cyprus, the US Secretary of State underlined the need for resolving the Cyprus problem in such a way that trust and security will simultaneously be brought in for both sides.
Mrs Clinton held meetings with TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and the ROC Foreign Minister Markos Kiprianu in April to hear the views of the two sides regarding the latest developments concerning the Cyprus negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive political settlement in Cyprus.
She was quoted as saying that a federal solution of the Cyprus problem was what the US strongly desired.
UK PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO UN JOHN SAWERS SAYS TWO SIDES SHOULD INTENSIFY EFFORTS
Britain’s Permanent representative to the United Nations John Sawers has said that a unique opportunity exists in Cyprus for the leaders to find a solution.
Britain's U.N. ambassador, John Sawers, said the council hopes the leaders "will seize the opportunity" to make progress with Downer's assistance.
We see a real opportunity to bring peace and a comprehensive settlement to Cyprus, which will hugely benefit both communities on the island," said Sawers.
Pointing to the importance of intensifying the negotiations process, Mr. Sawers said although they did not favour a timetable, the negotiations process in Cyprus was not open ended.
Noting that good progress had been made between the two leaders in Cyprus, the UK Ambassador expressed his expectation for the leaders in Cyprus to intensify their efforts in order to achieve real progress on the Cyprus issue.
BAN’S CYPRUS REPORT WAS DISCUSSED AT UN SECURITY
COUNCIL
Members of the UN Security Council have talked over the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon’s latest Cyprus report.
UN Special Representative to Cyprus Taye Brook Zerihoun also addressed the Security Council regarding the Cyprus negotiations process
In his latest report on the Cyprus issue to the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called on the two sides in Cyprus to accelerate negotiations in order to allow the solution of the Cyprus problem within a reasonable time frame.
Referring to the UNFICYP’s significant role in Cyprus, while the non-solution continues on the island, he called for the Security Council’s approval for the expansion of the UNFICYP mandate on the island for another 6 months.
The Security Council is expected to approve a resolution on this during its next session scheduled to take place on the 28th of May.
Ban also noted in his report that areas of significant divergence may now be fewer between the two parties but that most are nonetheless fundamental.
He said this reflects the challenge of translating the agreed objective of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality into a functional united Cyprus.
Adding that the international community waits to see the two parties in Cyprus achieve further progress at the talks by owning a flexible and constructive approach, Ban reiterated the UN’s continuous support towards the solution of the Cyprus problem.
DOWNER: TWO PARTIES SHOULD FOCUS ON A SOLUTION RATHER THAN CONFIDENCE-BUILDING MEASURES
I explained the importance of these negotiations to the future of Cyprus and to the people of Cyprus and my desire for a solution negotiations should be successful and that is very much the expectation of the international community” he said
Envoy stressed that the two sides should concentrate on the main game, the solution of the Cyprus problem.
“If they concentrate on the long term objective and they keep the vision of a comprehensive settlement in mind that being a bizonal, bi communal federation with political equality, then it will be achievable. Every effort should be made to make sure that that is achieved”
Ankara and Athens and the United Nations wants to see a settlement, I think most people in Cyprus want to see a comprehensive settlement. The challenge is the challenge of leadership can the leaders show the statesmanship to achieve this? I believe they can, I believe they do have that statesmanship to achieve a settlement.
