Does CY Need A New Anthem?

Postby bill cobbett » Sat May 23, 2009 6:56 pm

(Well it is Saturday and we haven't had a dodgy poll for ages)....

Naturally all anthems like flags are pollocks but as it seems compulsory to have one to keep the nationalists happy, which should it be?

The Super Souvla Song? Or the awful, trashy, existing one which belongs to a very past age?

Here are the choices for your consideration

THE GREAT SOUVLA SONG

and the awful existing one which seems to be more suited to some military dictatorship in South America or which might appeal to some in The Banana Republic of Paphos.

(Regrets -Sorry, it's so bad I have put in the above in as a substitute)

(Polite Warning - Anyone posting the trashy RoT one for our consideration will get a souvla up their bottom when we meet, likewise for any in Peyia posting in support of that one about Betty Windsor)

definetely and here is my version...

"The Cypriots Don't Want No Freaks"

There was beer all over the dance floor
and the band was playin' rhythm and blues
You got down and did the gator, and half
an hour later, you were barfin' all over your Girlfriend's shoes.

But the Cypriots don't want no freaks.
The Cypriots don't want no freaks
Just put a little smile on them rosy cheeks,
'Cause the Cypriots don't want no freaks.

She was the pride and the passion of Dixie
She did exactly what her daddy had planned.
She was perfect little sister until somebody missed her
and they found her in the bushes with the boys in the band
But the Cypriots don't want no freaks
The Cypriots don't want no freaks

So put a great big smile on them rosy cheeks,
'Cause the Cypriots don't want no freaks
No, the Cypriots don't want no freaks
Said, the Cypriots don't want no freaks

Just put that monster smile on them rosy cheeks
'Cause the Cypriots don't want no freaks
No, the Cypriots don't want no freaks,

Ahh...

Garterumen meran nihtan
Day and night we keep on waiting

Day and night we keep on waiting
For a breeze to blow our way
In this land so hot and barren
That refreshment never sees.

For the dawn we keep on waiting
To break on that fateful day
That will bring to everybody
Both rejoicing and release.

My Country has been divided in two

They say you should love your homeland.
They say you should love your homeland.
My father says so often.
My father says so often.
My country has been divided in two ...
my country has been divided in two ...
Which of the two parts should I love?
Which of the two parts should I love?

My country has been divided in two ...
my country has been divided in two ...
Which of the two parts should I love?
Which of the two parts should I love?

The next verse goes like this:

"Την μανούλλαν μας για πάντα
μιτσιοί μιάλοι καρτερούμεν
για να μας σφυχταγκαλλιάσει
τζιαι να νεκραναστηθούμεν"

"For ever, our sweet mother
Young and old, we all shall await
So that she can take us in her arms
and rise us from the dead"

Great choice. "Karteroumen mera nyxta" is a poem about Enosis.

Here's another one:

"Την Ελλάδα αγαπώ
αλλά κι εσένα
μ΄έναν έρωτα μεγάλο, αληθινό

Τα γαλάζια σου τα μάτια
τα θλυμένα
τον καθάριο της θυμίζουν ουρανό"

"I love Greece
as well as you
with a love that is deep and true

Your sad blue eyes
remind me of her clear skies"
