Greek Cypriot from London needs help- Cyprus Football

Postby GeorgeLondon » Fri May 22, 2009 11:04 am

Hi,
I know you must get this quite a bit as I have seen but I need some help on the best way to contact a first division club in Cyprus. Im from North London and understand and talk quite god greek but have forgotton how to read it since greek school, so getting the right contacts and email addresses from websites is difficult.

I've just finished a two year full time scholarship scheme with Professional English Conference team Stevenage Borough, where I picked up a few A-Levels as well. I have plans to go to University and contiune my football in England at a high level, but would love to spend some time in Cyprus playing full time pro football. Im also in Cyprus for two weeks at the end of July and would be happy to stay out there.

If anyone can point me in the right direction etc I would be very grateful

Thanks

check out the contact details for the clubs and get in contact with them. Have a look at 2nd & 3rd division clubs as they'll still pay a good amount.

If your professional and have plans to play at a high level in England, why would you want to go to Cyprus for a 'footballing holiday'. Shouldnt this be the time of the year where your having trials for next season?

Im not professional, I've just finished as a youth player at a pro club. It is very difficult to make a career at the top level in England, if your not signed on a professional contract after or during your youth/reserve team days.

By high level I meant, Conference south etc. Why would I want to go to Cyprus to play for a while? Well I would want to go for at least a year, if you have a good season for whatever club, you may be able to come back to England and play at a higher level or at least be given the opportunity.

Put it this way I would rather live in Cyprus, train daily and earn £200 a week rather than live in London, train twice a week maybe with a good semi-pro team and earn £200 a week and study full time or work full time at the moment.

Fair enough, when you said high level I thought meant Championship / Premiership level.

In that case your better off going to Cyprus which will be easier to make a name for yourself there. Cyprus' national team has a good crop of young players coming through and have been doing well of late. With some better coaching I think they have the potential to improve on the previous qualifying rounds.

Thanks DT and Dr J for the advice.

The only thing im struggling with at the moment is actually getting through to the right people. In England you can build contacts, get through to academies etc by email and phone, but I don't know how many of the clubs in Cyprus will actually bother reading etc, or even understand what im writing etc (Sorry if that sounds like an ignorant comment, but I mean what if the reception dosen't read English that well)

I've also got friends who play in my team that have played for the national youth teams such as Malta and Malaysia but I can't seem to get through to anyone at the Cypriot FA to see how I would go about this as they do not have a scouting network over here.

Maybe its best when I go over to Cyprus in the summer to visit a few clubs and ask them in person.

I've got a friend who's the manager of a 3rd division club...pm me your email and I'll get him to send you something for a try-out.

If I am not mistaken, the Cypriot 1st division is fully professional, with very few Cypriot players these days (about 25% - have a look at the roster of any team to verify that). The second division has also a foreign majority and most players are also pros.
