Turkey's President to Face Trial?

Postby Oracle » Mon May 18, 2009 10:47 pm

Turkish president 'facing trial'

A Turkish court has ruled President Abdullah Gul should stand trial for alleged embezzlement in the late 1990s.

The Welfare Party, a precursor of the governing AK Party, was accused of misappropriating funds from the state treasury after being banned in 1998.

Mr Gul, a founder of the AKP, was elected president in 2007.

The case will now be considered by an appeal court. But it is unclear whether Mr Gul will end up going on trial, as he could have immunity as president.

Hi Humanist; Remember Adnan Menderes and Celal Bayar and Fatin Rustu Zorlu. They embezzled and hanged for it(among other misdeeds.)

Let us know when you are going to Cyprus in 2010.

Yes, the above bbc article states that. But, I think the Courts are suggesting that he should not have immunity on that basis, because the alleged embezzling/fraud took place before he was President ...

Turkish court rules President Gul should stand trial for fraud
Turkey | 19.05.2009
A Turkish court has ruled that President Abdullah Gul should face trial for fraud. Gul is highly regarded in Europe, where he has acted as one of the driving forces behind Turkey's bid for European Union membership.

Gul's presidential immunity does not cover allegations which date back to the time before he took office, the court ruled.

Turkish authorities must now re-examine the case against Gul, who is accused of falsifying documents in the 1990s for the Welfare Party, a predecessor his ruling AK Party.

Since when have the stability or politics of Turkey been irrelevant to the Cyprus problem?

I suggest you go back to your Obama threads ...
