Asia's longest Civil War ends...

Postby Svetlana » Mon May 18, 2009 12:28 pm

Another small island torn apart by the ethnic devide, looks like it is heading for Peace. The 26 year long conflict between the minority Tamil Tigers (LTTE) and the (Sinhalese) Government is now over, with the death of the LTTE Leader, Prabkaran.

I don't doubt, it has been a dirty war on both sides - I was in Colombo last December when a bomb went off 100m from my hotel; one of many suicide missions agaisnt civilian targets - but now people can start getting their lives together again.

So many people have lost so much; I just hope the country can unite and come together once more.

Small Island!

But glad it is coming to an end.

That said as Cyprus is geographically in Asia and there was civil war since '63 maybe this is the longest running...

As long as this military victory is followed up by a just political solution, I am hopeful that we could see an end to this long conflict which has prevented Sri Lanka from realising its true potential.

There have been many celebrations in Pafos over the last couple of days, including those organised by Tamils. The Tamils and Sinhaleses get along pretty well in Cyprus; it is only 'at home' that issues polarise.

My only fear is a legacy of Tamil terrorist reprisals and Sinalese persecution of the minority.

The war is won, let Sri Lank now win the Peace.

But Cyprus is politically and culturally, in Europe.

Is Cyprus still at war with Turkey, formally?

Yes Lana!

Cyprus is still "formally" at war with Turkey.

Cyprus has been at war since 1974 and the present status is that there is only a cease fire.
